John Whelchel seems an older rider, but you may be right the way this is going....I can see Pipe and mr50guy snickering while were making fools outta ourselves.... I've got a photo that only BobbyM and a couple others back then would know all three riders. Just gotta scan and post....In the next day or so. ![]() |

Craig Canoy, Tony Flores, Bubba Erickson, Paul Dennis, Mark Toyama, Billy Frank, Allen Lippie, Bobby Simons or Scott Brown. If you take away a mans ability to fail, you take away his will to succeed.

I forgot about those you mention, Canoy, Flores, Toyama, Frank...I might of said Billy Frank since from what I remember he seemed tall....but your "pal" already stole the thunder......I think. 1/1/2008 8:47 AM Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, but wow what a trip down memory lane. I haven't thought about a bunch of these guys in years. I grew up racing the ameteur nationals in the early/mid 80's, and I truly believe that was the best crop of mini riders ever! However, there is one name I haven't seen mentioned. How about Jack Ricks? He was from Texas and fast back in the day. He and I had some really good battles everytime I crossed the red river. I think I heard he was paralyzed at Lake Whitney, but I don't know if that's true. Does anyone know what happened to him?

Its one of these guys: Canoy, can still ride real well, but only for ten minutes. His son Kevin, is starting ride a lot, and seems to be following with his father speed. It's just Craig's ADD that holds him back. The guy can't commit to anything, and be reliable.
He did win a six hour for me once...But I think he slept for ten days after. Without the following support, my race program would not be worthy:
SERVICE HONDA ~ MTA ~ IMS ~ GPR ~ SPIDER GRIPS ~ GLEN HELEN RACEWAY ~ NO TOIL ~ FLUIDYNE ~ MAXXIS ~ FREEK RACING ~ SCVET ~ SRA ~ ENGINE ICE ~ ACERBIS |

Him and Benjie Landers were real good friends of mine.. I got an invitation in 92 for jack's graduation but didnt get to go i was graduating the same day.. I lost touch with him.. Been trying to find him for a while now.

11/4/2009 11:48 AM Somebody say JACK RICKS ? WOW, Man, he was the thorn in my kidneybelt! I quit racing in 90 and ofcourse , he continued. We raced many times together in 60 class in Bihalia , Ms. He ( then at least ) was from Stuttgart , Ark. He had supportive parrents and remember his mother well. Kenneth Lawson I believe was his stepfather and a good guy. I had heard he was injured at Whitney too. Then I was at Little Rock , Ark a few years later and low and behold, he was there. Never had a chance to speak with him due to all the hoopla surrounding the Kaw tent at the time. Did see him from a distance and he looked the same but obviously in a sitting position. I have attempted to reach him with no success. One fast guy. We would battle as kids and one time I beat him out in the 2nd moto. We always pitted together and when we returned, his folks were the first to congradulate me. Once Jack removed his helmet I noticed he wascrying. I walked over to him and put my arm around him and said "It's OK, I will let you win next weekend", Mr Lawson stepped up and said "No, You beat him every chance you get son" , Guess it took me a while to gather what he meant by that but will never forget that time. If ANYONE has a clue where the guy is, please post it ! MEMORY LANE IS OPEN!..... |

Monty Carter was another fast kid from the Stuttgart area. He was paralyzed on his home practice track in the late '70's. RIP Monty.
