Damn! It's up for auction in Las Vegas.

So many questions....starting with "If I bought it, where would I sleep?"

Never mind that , there are 3 97 CR250's still in crates, all from the same seller, plus a load of other quality MX bikes.

Went to this auction about 10 years ago. They were auctioning off Mike Bell's 1980 SX championship OW Yamaha. It was the real deal too-hand tigged frame, billet and Ti everywhere, alloy tank, works forks, etc.. I probably spent 2 hours looking it over! That alone was worth checking out. Nice bikes for sure, bring your wallet!(or two)

I wonder what the 3rd crated 1997 CR250 will pull.

And I would love the 1975 RM125 too..

Im guessing Terry Good already passed on it

And Jesus H Christ, how fucking annoying are the Mecum Auctions, made for TV shouty selling .

Might fetch a bit more. A bike from the man that dominated the biggest mx race we may ever have in this country. Even if you knew very little about motocross back then. You knew Carlsbad.

I am bit curious who the "major east coast collection" is as in could it be east coast vintage? There are a number on there with that in the description and as usual they look good in a picture so it makes some sense.

I had a 75 not long ago I restored - great to look at but if it is an M and not an S you aren't going anywhere fast!

Cool bike! Remember watching that race on Wide World of Sports!
F the 97 CR250's --- garbage!
The local honda dealer has some still in the
back room, with 98 cr125's also

Ii bet the owner paid a pile of cash
for it, and is praying he will brake even
Not a good investment!

Whoa! I modeled my '77 RM 80 after that bike! Extended front mud flap, rear shocks upgrade (Bilsteins, no less. And married to forks that buckled under peer pressure. Not the choice combo), and tapered silencer (again, a poor decision). Wolsink, DeCoster, Rahier, Watanabe, LaPorte...if they would have allowed 7th graders to get tattoos, I would have a big fat factory "S" on my bicep today!

Terry Good commented on FB that he passed on this at $20,000.00

It looks well used as if Carlsbad was not it's final destination. Look at that C/S sprocket.

Think you can rebuild this bike from your local dealer?

The worn down teeth on the footpegs show how much time this bike has on it. Did it go back to Europe for the rest of the GP season, or did it stay in the US for the Trans-Am series in the Fall? And did someone else ride it after?

The biggest issue is that it was obviously not stored in a dry environment.

So, one wins this auction for say $20K.....what will it take to bike it to look reasonable $$$$$$. And I am only considering cosmetics. Forget finding internal engine parts.

Still, I wish I had FU money just to own that bike as is.

To some, the way it is, may be worth more to them than it being 'prettied' up.

Patina, as the cognoscente (I'm not one of them) call it.

Thank goodness with that correction - I thought you'd gone all weird on us philG with seeming lurve for the 97's.Woohoo

About the only thing notable about the '97 was that they were Honda's first foray into production MXer aluminium frames.

I did around 5 AF Gen1 conversions with 500 engines about a month or 2 after they came out - it was a very, very simple job with that chassis. Within a few weeks, my various mates, bar one (who was, and still is, basically just a 'bling boi', decades later) , had gone back to their (well developed / set up) steel framed bikes. It was an atrocious chassis.

Yeah, I rode one, awful, by then we were on 610 Huskies and didn't ride a 2 stroke again till 2014 when we got a TM300SMX.. To be fair , that's what made me think they were 97's , that bad even McGrath wouldn't ride one.
