Hello, I have a 1977 engine and tried installing a 1976 RM125 transmission in the 1977 cases. including the 1976 shifting drum.
My engine runs great!,,, but hard shifting now. I noticed the shifting drum sticks out of the cases on the clutch side just a faction of an inch and pinches on the 2 plates with the (4 counter sink screws) that holds the shifting drum in place. When I loosen the 4 screws, the bike shifts fine, while not running.
I thought the years 1976 and 1977 transmission also including the 1978 RM125 transmission were identical but I could be mistaken.
Thanks for any info...

Are you 100% sure the shift drum bearing on the stator side is fully seated?

Hello,
I don't think there is a bearing on the shifting drum. Its easy enough to tear the engine down again. I believe the the shifting drum just rides in the case itself. I was wondering if the drums are the same??? the drum just seems to be a hair to long or likes its possible not sitting in properly.. The shifting drum does rotate nice with the counter sink screws loose though??? Tighten those countersink screws and the shifting drum wont rotate.....

I cannot remember for sure on the 100 & 125 but on the bigger RMs the two spring loaded ratchet plates in the end of the drum are not identical. The slots where the pawl engages is offset and having those reversed will cause that exact symptom.

Thanks! I think the paws and little springs are in the correct way but maybe they are in backwards . I do see the offset and thought I follow the book on how to reinstall the paws and the springs.
It just looks like when I tighten the Philips 2 head counter sink screws on the plate closer to the kick start lever, the shifting drum than binds and wont turn. I thought the plate was hitting the drum..
Thanks for any information!!!

I was also just told that the gasket kit I bought off EBay for my Suzuki RM125b 1977 may not have the proper thickness of the center gasket and be to thin. That would also make sense to me. I was told it is suppose to be .6mm thick .I have to now check that as well. I ordered an OEM center gasket today if the other gasket is to thin to use. Have to split the cases again to see. Learning hard way,,,, buy OEM only......
