Hey there fellow Vitardians

I have an '82 RM250 that had a Simons UDX-60 front end I sold about 2-1/2 years back. I have always had a complete '82 CR480 KYB front end to bolt up, but my fat, 48-yr old @ss has been too busy chasin' hos and busting up fools to get to it (mainly, though, I've just been a procrastinator).

What fork oil set up should I use? Where can I locate bearings? Local industrial bearing shop, right? Understand that the KYB fork seals from Yamaha will work just as well as Honda will be about 1/2 price. Is that about right?

Forgot to add, suited up weight is 200 lbs, and use would be for intermediate/vet MX.

I would use racetech"s setup guide for the forks, they list the oil weight also. seems like stiffest springs they make & then play with oil heights, for all the Vintage/evo bikes that I have done, the calculation always comes back stiffest springs availible for riders in the 190-200 lbs range.I"ve got 84 rm 250 43"s on my 82, have not had a chance to break it in yet, any 43mm has to be better than the stock 38mm"s.

All balls had a chart on how to put different front ends on different bikes. Worst case you find a set of later year Suzuki 43mm clamps and then may have to futz with axle spacers but I doubt it.

I was looking at my 88 Yamaha cartridge forks last night and it looks like with a little bit of machining they will drop right in drum brake kyb lower tubes. Smile

Oh and the racetech fork setup has always been the California setup with stiff forks and soft shock. Maybe they have changed but I always copied my modern bike setup. For 200lbs I'd run .46s. Start with a low oil height and add oil to get the right bottoming resistance, my starting point is about 2" above the cartridge valve when fully extended, on my Yamaha kyb forks that is about 170mm

That's some great info, 450!

Yeah, I've got the '83 RM250 43mm triples and from my understanding, both years of 480s are bolt-ins (the KYBs and Showas). I've even seen an '82 RM465 with the '82 43mm CR480 KYB/double leading shoe combo, which is what inspired me to take the plunge back in '14.

I haven't had time up to this point to ever get around to making the swap but I sure am looking forward to getting this together later this summer and trying out vintage racing! There is a vibrant scene here in Houston (and in Texas), it should be a lot of fun.

Chris, the CR480 forks should work well on your RM. At 200lbs, Race Tech's .46kg fork springs should be perfect. I'd also recommend their Emulators. I have both installed in '84 RM forks and they work great. You'll need a 5.2-5.3kg rear spring to balance it out.

BTW, several Houston area vintage racers have been coming up to DFW for the TVRC races.

Cool, Cam! I sure would enjoy getting into the scene.

I have a custom Ohlins on the bike built by Steve Marpes back in 2010. The rate is 5.2 if memory serves .. but I need to stop procrastinating and get the bike back together!

Been hearing great things about the TVRC races up there in the metroplex.
