KTM 1986 MX 80

Edited Date/Time 4/23/2018 2:12pm
Hi, I have an 1986 KTM 80 MX, The engine is currently undergoing a rebuild with a new main bearing, conrod, piston and rings. KTM say the engine year is a 1985? Did they make this model in this year? and how much are these rare bikes worth?

1986 was the first year for the KTM 80 in the US. I do not know if other countries got them in 1985. From what i remember there were 2 versions of the bike, the original was considered small for many minicycle riders and a I think another version (the SR?) was introduced later that year with a roomier chassis and better power.

I have no idea what it is worth.

the first gen KTM 80s were not 82 or 83cc like the japanese 80s. They were either 72cc or 79cc. Now, KTM did make a larger, full 83cc KTM80 MX SR model but I don't think we ever got that one. I remember a 1989 or 90 mini shootout and the KTM was about the same or even smaller than the YZ80.

Jack Schidlemeier in Mobile Al has enough parts to build multiple bikes. He has multiple everything except for swingarms. His number is 251-649-6966.

Hello guys its me ive all but given up i tried that guy Jack as i was told to actually a couple of times he does seem to have what i need but i cant pin the guy down to finding anything to sell me he goes off in ten different directions it seems. Ive asked him a half dozen times for parts he says he will get back to me and never does??? Ok gonna try again I need a piston & ring set for a 1986 KTM 80 MX Can anyone help me?? I also was told that the coolant in my lower unit is from a badly produced waterpump/clutch case oxidizing on the early to mid 80;s models KTMs, This guy Jack says he knows exactly whats wrong as this bike is spuing out pink milk basically from atop the clutch arm where it meets the clutch case. I cant get him to send me one and have tried several times i am totally agrivated ? At this point does anyone out there have a lower unit including waterpump that doesnt leak and a piston kit ill buy a complete motor for this bike if anyone knows of any out there???? Or can get MR. Jack to find this stuff int his garage and send it to me ill pay anyone who can get this done for me????? I am desparate its been over a year and ive gotten no where. I also need a chain tensioner for 1 side of the bike and a magura clutch perch. ive found a gasket set on Andre;s site and a new seat. thats a start i guess. Can anyone tell me where to find a replacement perch i dont care if its aftermarket as long as it works?? if anyone wants or knows anyone who will complete this bike for me i will gladly pay???? Send help please...... Thanks fellas as you can see in my pics the bike looks great just needs to be finished top end rebuild etc................ Help!!! my email is Flynnsfloorhouse@gmail.com my phone is 443-669-4267 Shawn Flynn of Maryland.

The KTMs of these years had the same problems with rotting magnesium outer case covers that Hondas had. In fact KTM closely copied Honda (as did pretty much every one else back then) with things like mag outer cases, removable subframe, etc.

If you've got coolant coming out of the cover, you should research what goes into to repairing the clutch cover rot on Hondas. It's not just the outer case, you have to clear/replace the hoses, radiator, etc. This rot is chronic, and the overheating it creates causes seizures. Think about how much possibly fixing all that is going to cost, even if you can get this Jack guy to fork over the parts.

When the KTM 80s came out as I recall they were not well received, which may be one of the reasons for the bike's scarcity. If you have some kind of emotional attachment that's one thing, but if you are looking for an 80 as a rider you would probably be dollars ahead parting out the KTM and getting your son a Japanese brand.

Just my humble .02

Nice to see an 80s 80 together and running. We've got an '85 KX80 that we bought cheap yet there's no where we can really run it, unless we visit somewhere that has a pit bike track or do a team enduro on it for a laugh. Maybe some VMX clubs should look at introducing an 80cc class for kids although I doubt there's enough of us out there with these bikes still running.

Wow that picture brings back some memories!
Not sure how many were brought to the States in 86 but my brother and I had the only 2 in IL.

I got so jealous of my brother the next year because his bike got stolen so after the insurance settlement he got to get a new 87 with the super trick upside down forks!

Old thread but hoping someone might see this and be able to help.

I’m building a 86 KTM 80 and need a usable crank.  I have a new piston and rod kit from Andre, but the crank I have is total junk.  Bike sat for years with water in it!
