Is that the Cycle news reporter who's face is hidden by the van hood ? The one that used to ride around on the xr 75. And possibly his wife next to him. She had a little pit bike too.

Factory Hondas had that panel thing in the airbox. Not sure why.

Are you sure it is not the reverse inductance transducer at 2.3 giga watts

I think it is put bolt in threw the air filter. The air box was real thin to clear the shock.

That's probably right. I never took the air filter out or seat off to actually check.

The panel allows access to the bolt that secures the air filter. Instead of fishing around in there like the regular guys did.

No, but my friend does. It's Thorpe's RC500. I gave it a temporary home for a few months until it went overseas to it's new owner.

Hey Robgvx, I cant thank you enough for taking the time to post these wonderful pictures of this wonderful bike. I love seeing current clear detailed pictures of the great works bikes of the past of our motocross history.I wish more collectors would do it. It gives us guys a chance to see up close the workmanship that went into these bikes...I just love it!!!

The bike is the machine that David Thorpe won the 1985 world championship on and was presented to DT by HRC for winning the championship. However HRC made Keith Thorpe remove all the engine internals before it was handed over. Hence the bike was a non-runner. There was nothing inside the engine apart from a countershaft, gear selector shaft and kickstart shaft/gear. We tried to find parts to get it running but although there are sufficient parts knocking around nobody would help a brother out by selling anything. Assholes, IMHO.

The motor you see in bits was a complete RC500 motor that the owner purchased from a guy in Italy in order to make the bike a runner again. (Yes, he was able to buy a complete, genuine HRC motor which I found advertised on a web site!).

According to the mechanic who re-built it he had never seen anything so fine-tuned. He said that every part of that motor had been worked on to make it the best that it could be.

The crank looks pretty trick huh?

Trick-ass crank. We wonder what the weights/inserts are....

How the bike was when purchased:

No CR500s (or even RC500s) ever had a power valve.

Oh, and note the vacuum take-off point on the cylinder. The vacuum was used to operate a diaphragm pump to lift the fuel from the bottom of the low fuel tank (which Thorpe didn't use in 1985 although Malherbe did).

Radiator must have cost a ton of money to build, but probably not as much as the 1986 model, which also had a bend built in to it

1986 model had a bent radiator, rear disc, and DT used the low tank option.

Thanks again Rob for posting...I wonder where that 86 modled is??? It is to bad that the AMA outlawed the works bikes here in the US...Just think what we would have seen come out of Japan...
