Only $10 for all 2024 SX, MX, and SMX series (regularly $30).
And wheels Alex, wheels. Those original Honda hoops crack and flat spot like nobodies business. Buchanan's for dimpled Excels or non dimpled Suns with heavy duty stainless spokes AND STAINLESS nipples. Motion Pro Lite Lok rim locks , tubes, tires, bearings and shoes. Go ahead and get the hubs and backing plates powder coated low gloss black.
The engines in those are pretty much low end/midrange. You might dig around and see what kind of input you can get on getting a little more out of it as you may be a bit disappointed to say the least.
I can help you a little with those $1500.00 Works Performance Pro Racer shocks.
The Shop
The forks went elsewhere when I forgot to get them at Unadilla.
Nice link but I barely read English.......
Don't really know what you mean about getting something with brakes, though.
But, as I said before, if that's not the case, then my bad. He wants it for looks? Cool. It's his bike and a free country. Go for it.
Honda spent a ton to build a works replica and had to skimp somewhere. Unfortunately they skimped on suspension and rims.
Besides, Spartacus is 58 years old and I doubt he is concerned with being overly fast. Building a trick as shit Elsinore is a true form of therapy.
Bike with brakes = disk brakes.
Haven ridden moto off and on for over 43 years I'm not sure more practice would make me faster anyway. Welcome to Vitalmx though.
Chrisg19, I was surprised that bike was for sale as long as it was, not a lot of them available that I could find. I got them down on price too.
What year/model forks, i.e. '83 and....? Are the 480, 250 and 125 forks the same in the model years that I want?
Yes, I've ridden a '79 250 Elsinore
I know it's therapeutic. The only reason I'm here is to get more tips on building and maintaining my '76 250 Elsinore. Plus, I like knowing there are more people out there who, like me, still enjoy "the old days" and the bikes that fueled all the fun back then.
Lastly, if you've been around long enough, you hear that stuff i was talking about: guys throwing parts at their bike to "Go fast". And if you know enough, you know that spending time on the rider is the most important "mod" a person could make.
Now, that wasn't the case here, and I acknowledged that.
So maybe, we could just drop it and go back to what brought us to the forum in the first place?
It really is a great looking bike.
And I see what you mean about the brakes. But if we all wanted THAT, we wouldn't be in this section of the forum. Hahaha.
How far do you want to go?....
A 1" longer alloy swing arm and decent shocks are by far the best "single hit" up-grade you can make. (Ohlins, Works Performance, Reiger, NOT Fox, they were good back in the day but compared to anything modern they are very dated)
The stock forks are spindly and flex like cheese strings but they do work quite well. 43mm forks are a great up grade so long as you slide them through the clamps far enough. They are a lot longer than the originals so it can really mess up the handling if you don't set them right. The 43mm clamps also move the bars back, which is a little weird especially if you are used to modern bikes or tall. That's why I made billet clamps to sort out the bar position.
The '83 DLS front brake is the best you will get. It has to be set up right though or it will not work.... at all.
The motors are actually very strong and don't need a lot doing to them. They produce just as much powere as the '79's they just do it smoothly with a less pronounced "hit". They tail off about 1000rpm earlier as well, but they are easier to ride than the 78/79's. A 38mm flat slide off a later CR helps with the top end and intital throttle response.
They do vibrate a lot,so keep on top of the engine mount bolts and swing arm pivot. I've fitted a '79 head and a head steady (plus some extra frame bracing) to reduce any vibration induced damage.
