Step one - Start scraping

Step two - Keep scraping

Step three - More scraping

Step four - At this point it is good for a racer, but from here some 1000 grit wet sanding and final polish will make it look really nice.

I spent about 30 minutes doing this while watching Monday Night Football last night. You can try this no matter how chapped the plastic is, and if the end result isn't what you want, you can always source NOS parts or Aftermarket parts that could cost a lot more than your time. So, in conclusion: Take a chance! You may be surprised with the results.

Thanks for this , good stuff !
I'd like to know the progressive method toward 1000 and then buffing ?
I've read of some people using a rotax with felt bob / buff and Turtle wax or
other automotive polishing compound.

As for sticker install read that Yamaha would heat the plastic locally for better adhesion.

I for one would never paint a tank on a working bike.

I've got the tank Marc wrote about in his plastic restoration article -- it does look new!
