Hello friends...I'm coming back big time. Busy archiving thousands of negatives during the '70s and '80s that I took at seven SoCal tracks. What a great interest there is in Old School Moto photographs and I've got the largest collection. Hey Tom! Nice to see you in here! I just went through the pics you have posted to date and found a few of me, but I know you have tons more. Everything from early red and white FMF jerseys with the airplane on the front on my x9 Hondas to my DG days with 7h to 42 to 45 to 129 and other numbers...let me know if you run across any of them. Saw lots of Davey Williams in there!

3/23/2009 1:52 PM My Whittier neighbor Bill163 gave me the One Chance to Win film. It's about the 1975 AMA 500cc National Championship Series which will go down in motocross history. American Brad Lackey and Jimmy Weinert were relentless in defeating Pierre Karsmakers. Be sure to check out the bonus 50 minute behind the scenes feature. I highly recommend this Pipeline Digital Media produced DVD.
Craze-It's true that the picture you posted wasn't mine, but it sure was a good one. Most of my Davey Williams shots from Saddleback are when he had #32. Interestingly, you just posted that picture of Hannah led by Williams when they flashed that very one in the One Chance to Win film. I should mention that I talked to both Davey and his brother Rocky. They were hangin' out with other Old School Moto riders at the Swolen shop before the second Anaheim SX. Law131-Sounds like you knew how to handle the Saddleback clay during the day...Wardy was another thing though. Bauer-Thank you too! It's great to be in contact with the great Steve Bauer. I have your bike numbers taped to my pc and will be tracking down those hot shots of you...oh here were go...some more of you dicing at OCIR! |

3/22/2009 6:39 AM Tom,
I have that “One Chance to Win” DVD. I was a spectator at the round in NY at Motomasters Park just North of Syracuse. It was a brutally hot and humid NY summer day. Motomasters Park in the closest thing we had in NY to Saddleback with an important difference. Motomasters is a rough sand track. It wouldn’t whoop out like Southwick. Southwick would get deep rolling whoops. Motomasters would get rolling whoops and deep square edged killer whoops. It was that track that trained most of us NYers to ride sand and badly whooped out tracks. Motomasters would also run practice during the week. That National in 75 was the only one held there and the track runs a full season schedule to this day. One of the owners, Carmen Ricelli, used to live right down the street from me in Syracuse. He had a chiropractic office (imagine that) that he recently closed. Pierce Law AMA Pro 131 1977-1979 Suzuki RM 250/400 New York |

Rocky gave me plenty of shit for missing it, though. Now I feel even worse for flaking out, knowing that you were there. I sent you a PM with my phone number, or you can email me at sdbmoto@gmail.com

3/23/2009 4:21 PM Law 131-I see that you liked the One Chance to Win film too. You must have great memories of that 1975 series round at Motomasters.
Bauer-No worries Steve...about missing the party at Swolen. Davey Williams is doing fine and Rocky is still turning wrenches, not on a dirt bike, but his Harley which he rides throughout the year. I had a camera with me and took shots of those Old School Moto riders who were there. Oh yes, I need to post those on this site. |

Tom,
You've got a nice shot on your site of Jeff Jennings on his #30 Wheelsmith Maico from 1978. I remember back then you had another of him, possibly the same day, on the downhill left hand sweeper after the plateau jump...JJ had the bike sideways class-c style and shooting a big roost. I'd love to see that one again. Bigfoot |

3/23/2009 11:18 PM Bigfoot-More of Jeff Jennings will be coming soon. One of my best shots of him was found in the October 1977 Dirt Bike pg.30-31. It was the centerspread photograph for the Superbowl of Supercross feature.

3/23/2009 11:44 PM Craze-The fleet of Harleys is growing and they are all Sportsters. My showbike won the Laughlin River Run in the Sportster class and was also in the Pomona Easyriders show. The 883R has 70's paint and graphics though it is really a 2003 model. Now I have a 2007 Nightster which is all black with no chrome...it's my Old School ride.

9/25/2009 2:40 AM Bill163-I think I just fixed that oil leak on the Harley...still in the garage...oh check this out...the Costella Special...world's greatest Hodaka! Yes, I think I will put down the camera and take this bike out to the vintage races.
lovecountry03-Pictures of AJ Whiting? All you have to do is ask. I was the reporter and photographer for the NMA during the seventies. On the "Amazing Site..." go to photo ID#1143. I think you will like what you find! Please say hello to AJ and Matt for me. Well look here...I just found a 11x14 of AJ from 1987 at Glen Helen. |

4/2/2009 10:29 AM I don't remember us up north having a similar deal except Cycle News back in the day.....
A rider back around mid 90s, Don Mendenhall, was a part of a small magazine type of Central Cal, Bay, NorCal publication...forgot the name of it.. Know he should have tons of pics from that era....Mid/later 90s motoheads should remember it... Thanks again Mr. Corley and trick121 for the thread. Found it way cool. ![]() |

4/22/2009 12:48 AM mr50racer- Yes, I sure do have pictures from NMA races thoughout the '80s. Especially from Saddleback, Indian Dunes, Sunrise and Barona Oaks. I published the World Mini Grand Prix program from '85 to '95. #111 Kawasaki has been seen more than once.
ocscottie- It's good to hear that your brother took the time to make photo albums from those races. Most racers just have everything in a box some place. BobbyM- Glad that you like the site. You can check the shots out by touching the blue search bar. Don't put any bike numbers in yet. BMSOB- Thank You! andymoto- I was a CYCLE NEWS reporter throughout the '70s and '80s. There was always a need for more local motocross coverage and many efforts came about . Some of the papers included CYCLE SCENE WEST, MOTORCYCLE WEEKLY, THE SO. CALIFORNIA MOTOCROSS, MX WEST, CYCLE TIMES, CYCLE SCOOP, MOTORCYCLE SPORT and my own SOCAL MOTOCROSS from 1980 to 1985. I was with all of those papers and it was always nice to publish a story or photograph of a racer who really deserved it. |

My Dad was showing me the other day those photo viewers you made back then. Here is a photo of me, Steve Bauer, Dave Osterman and my uncle Bob "BobbyM" Myers "Northern Calif #1 plate holder back in mid 70's" my Dad took at the previewing of One Chance to Win. ![]() [ |

I published the World Mini Grand Prix program from '85 to '95. #111 Kawasaki has been seen more than once. I did some Cycle News local articles while Plymouth was still open '77, '78; during the Dale Brown era at CN. Good guy to me; teaching me, a teenager what the jist of the story(s) should surround and to mention up and coming talent. Had to send slides though.
We had a Greg "Nuclear" Neukam that did a lot of the NorCal CN stuff. Same era as us both. Just mentioned if you ever knew or heard of him. Supposedly still up here, but MIA for years....Know he has to have tons of stuff. Also did one of the Sears Trans-AMAs for Modern Cycle. Got think 3 pics in that one issue; the '77 race think Sun won; just got slides and no scanner; hope one day to. Funny you mention pics in box; had so many of many Pros like BobbyM, Shultz, Magoo; too many to count....that box is long gone with the Modern Cycle. Peek at Ebay once/while and see if issue is up for bid.....one day hope it pops up. Saw a former Expert at the Lackey race; he still has a few pics I took and gave to him; but still makes me sick how many pics I had and poof....not saying they were the greatest; just the fact of having them and like losing part of your life. Thanks for being in the sport and for all you contributed to it. I remember at least one or two of those papers you were involved with. Seems you did a lot of CN articles. Too bad the sport is no longer as popular locally and all the track gone now. Remember 4-5 Divisions of Nov; 2-3 Int; even sometimes 2 of 125 and 250 Experts. Some like a mini Nationals with the named riders; was exciting as heck. We all were sure lucky to have been a part of the best and most historical times MX have had. Be cool to see some of those World Mini Progs....and some more pics for sure. ![]() |

4/5/2009 7:43 PM KiKi-Matthew- I'm sure you enjoyed the One Chance to Win film as much as I did. Hey, just take a look at those Old Schol Moto guys-Steve Bauer, Dave Osterman and Bob "BobbyM" Myers...they are still pounding laps and keeping in shape.
andymoto- Both you and I were there to document the greatest days in motocross racing. We both did some work for CYCLE NEWS too. I knew editor Dale Brown well and also John Ulrich who lived up the street in La Mirada. Rex Reese and I covered the 1977 Hangtown for MODERN CYCLE. My first turn shot of #26 "Radical" Ron Turner became the cover photo. Donny Emler liked it so much that he used it for the cover of the 77/78 FMF catalog. The mini riders are so special to me. Bruce Bunch and Ricky Hemme are always in my thoughts. I can always remember CRF rider Larry Brooks talking to me at OCIR. For sure I helped Jeff Ward with his archive because his father Jack always got pictures from me. Just found the coolest picture from the 1988 World Mini Gran Prix that I took for Ricky Carmichael. He won three trophies that were taller than he was! So yes, I will be bringing out more pictures of the former mini stars for everyone to see. mr50racer- So your mom didn't keep anything of you? I'm going to find stuff for both you and your mom. It's time for all Old School Moto riders to bring their pictures out of the box and start sharing them with others...that's what I am doing. |

But the images of that night is totally out of control. Female mud wrestling, Tony D doing the Red Hot Chile Pepper sock thing... typical PC party of the time. Tom I should let you do your magic and try to bring it back to life. |
