Hi, just found this thread and I will be following along closely. I also need the covers you are looking for.
nine1seven,
Very nice looking 96. Funny, I found this thread by recognizing your bike on a google image search. We have a thread going in thumpertalk right now about the graphics for the 96 cr250 mcgrath replica. The guy that you sold your extra set to has been helping us.
I am currently doing exactly what you mentioned, I started with a 1993 cr250 and am building it up as close as I can to McGrath's 1996 specs.

moto_123:
let me know if there is anything I can help with. I may have some parts you need: an airbox from a 96 (dark gray) that will fit your 93 as well as a complete front end ie forks, clamps, axle, etc. (in case you want to put current Showa fork components on your CR). I also have an extra 96 carb, wheel set, brake sets, etc. If you want to get your fasteners replated so they look like new, I know a great place here in Houston for that.
I have the frame painted on that 93 so it will be going together soon. I'll post pics as I go along.
Get some pics of your MC Replica project up here!

Thanks for the help for sure, I know I will need it. I'm away for work right now, so all I've done for the past week is try to source the parts I need. I already found a black (grey?) airbox from a 96 as well as a very clean stock 96 seat. I can't seem to find a 97 cr125 stock seat (so it says CR, mine says HONDA in white instead). But with the funds I have, I think I can get reasonably close. Then fine tune it as I have money available. I'll start a thread with pictures when I get back home.
A couple things I know I still need:
kick lever - mine is so worn it has been resting on the pipe and scratched it up. Is there a way to rebuild the pivot in these? A new one seems rediculous.
rear wheel - mine still has what I believe are the stock wheels. The rear is an 18" which I originally thought was put on, but from a couple threads it sounds like 18" might have been stock. Even thou everyone was running 19. So I'm looking for a 19 if I can find one cheap enough.

Just got home from a trip to find a factory Honda ignition cover on my doorstep-exactly what I was looking for! Pretty much the last thing I needed for my CR. Thanks Bart! Your part is in transit. I'll email the tracking number to you right now.

moto-123: the part that is worn out is the aluminum not the steel insert. Unfortunately you have to buy the whole kickstart lever from Honda. I have one that is worn out as well that I replaced.
CR's had 18" rear wheels until 1995. I have a front and a rear complete wheel set that are in OK shape from a 1996 CR250. The rear wheel will bolt right on your 1993 but it has a silver raw aluminum hub. I laced a 1996 rim to the 1993 hub using 1996 spokes. While you are at it have them zinc plated and they come back looking like jewelry.

Kick lever - that's what I was affraid of, thanks for confirming thou
Wheel - interesting thought, my hubs are already black and in really good shape. I could just get a new rear 19 inch rim and laces. I'll have to look into that. And the zinc plating is a great idea! Now I just need to spread this project out long enough that I have the money.
On a total side note, I returned home today to find a nice size pile of boxes for me. Good news is everything arrived. Bad news is some sellers don't describe their items very well. The grey airbox is in OK shape, but I am covering it with a sticker anyway. The rubber boot is dry and cracked, luckily the one I have on the bike is better. But the plastic basket that holds the air filter came and was bent so bad I can't even use it. It's worse than the one I was replacing for the same reason. GRRRR... it's so frustrating to receive complete junk sometimes. You would think the person disassembling the bike would at least look at the part and throw it away if it was junk.

I started putting the 93 CR250 together. Thanks to BD I have a factory Ignition Cover for my MC replica: I also replaced the swingarm pivot bolt with a Titanium one that saves a 1/4 lb. over the steele one.

I checked out your bike. Looks really good. Are you going to use that stock pipe? If not I need one that doesn't have any dents or damage maybe I can work a deal with you or someone else out there who has one for a 92-96 CR250.

No I already bought a pro circuit works pipe for the bike. I was thinking of selling it anyway. Mine does have a dent in the side, about 2" dia if I remember right and about 1/2" deep. I will look at it close when I get a chance and try to get some good pictures for you. Also the kickstart lever has scratched the paint off. If you can't find a perfect one thou, this one is definitely repairable.

I was just looking closer at your 96 cr, where did you get that silencer? It looks like carbon fiber?

Update on the pipe: I took a closer look and I believe the pipe is actually for the 95/96 model. Neither of the bolt locations line up and it is currently held on with a metal extender at the front and no bolt at all in the rear. Kind of strange. Maybe you can confirm? If you put a 95 pipe on a 93, the front bolt hole should be about an inch too low on the pipe and about an inch too high on the rear location of the pipe.

moto_123: There are rubber mounted pivot type connections that you are missing from those two locations from what I see in your pics. You can get them without a problem from Honda. The pipe looks correct for that bike. I really want a perfect stocker or works finish pipe for my 93. 92-96 will work. I plan on removing the paint anyway and then grinding off the seam and welding it together so it looks like a works pipe. Otherwise I'll just use a PC works pipe. If anyone out there has a perfect stock pipe laying around let me know!
I bought that silencer brand new off ebay for $50. It is an Answer carbon fiber piece that is quite a bit lighter than stock. I was thinking of trying to make an end cap piece that looks like MC's from 96.

Sorry, should have made that more clear. I do know about the rubber mounted pivot pieces at both connections. I purchased all the pieces for the rear connection point new from honda. With the correct rubber mounts installed, the pipe does not line up properly. At the rear connection point the pipe is 1 inch too high (above the rubber connector) At the front connection point there is the correct rubber mount PLUS another extender. It also does not line up with only the correct pieces.
If you are thinking of getting the PC works pipe, might want to move quickly. PC stopped making the works version for the 92 pipe. There are still some left at their suppliers thou. If you need, I can get you the name of the supplier I bought mine from. At that time they had 5 total left.
Thanks for the info on the silencer, I found one on ebay as well. Yay, another step closer!

What do you think a autographed MC SX championship winning tank be worth?
Skip Norfolk MC's mechanic had MC autograph it and gave it to a friend of mine......I told my friend it was his retirement fund.

Lumpy: what year is the tank from? if it has the graphics from 95/96 I'd make you an offer. Do you have any pictures?

Made some progress on the 93 Project. Yes, that is just a tube mounted on the rear wheel. Gotta get a new Dunlop on the back to match the front. I cleaned up the swingarm and greased up the linkage bearings. I hope to have it together and running this weekend.

Looks really good! Not gonna lie thou, the plastic bucket is really funny. I'm not saying my stands look any better since they are also home made, but I would hate to have the plastic lid crack and let your bike fall over. Maybe put a piece of wood on there?

BD: Good deal I'm glad we made that work. I appreciate you hooking me up with the ignition cover!
Moto_123: Yeah, I'm running out of stands! I just bought an 87 CR250 for my next project so I'm needing to get a couple more stands. I'll have to wait until I sell this 93 CR. I have four bikes now: 87, 93, 96 CR250's and an 07 CRF450.
About those forks: I have a set of 96 CR250 forks and clamps that you can make work on your 93. They are in perfect shape and have new seals, oil and stiffer springs like MXA said to do back then. Honda made some big changes in 95. The clamps on the 95/96 hold the forks further apart and the spacing from the top clamp to the bottom is around a half inch further apart. This is because the head tube on the 95/96 is longer and uses bigger bearings and races. I have all the parts you will need to convert it, the 96 CR forks with fork gaurds, complete front wheel with axle and spacers, clamps, new OEM steering head bearings and races. . I also have a used 96 shock that bolts right on the 93. It does need a new bumper though.
