Help!! Working on a 1987 KX250 and really stumped with a couple of parts. Hoping someone here has a link to or actual parts in their shop.

LH power valve & power valve rack. It has a rack & pinion style power valve actuator and the gears are stripped on the rack/rod and LH power valve. RH gears are OK.

Local dealer says obsolete from Kawasaki, and have been looking on eBay but no luck actually purchasing anything.

Can post pics if anyone has something close and wants to compare. 86 & 87 same or ??

The parts you need only fit the '87. Your dealer is correct, they are no longer available. He doesn't have one right now but keep checking with this eBay store, he dismantles LOTS of motorcycles. http://stores.ebay.com/OEM-CYCLE

Put a want ad on Mark's Vintage Swapmeet as to what you need. It's free anyways, so try it. Allows bikes n parts up to 1989.

If all else fails, have both of the valves welded into the wide open position and leave the rack out. It will lose a bit of low end but is still completely rideable. That was a piss poor setup on Kawasakis part. I've seen lots of KIPS valves with the gear stripped off.

Actually, I believe Lechien is riding an '89 model in the pic. Smaller fuel tank and a little more top end vs. the '88.

That is an '89 Lechien is riding. I bought an '89 brand new off the floor.
1 - no blue plastic.
2 - amazing bike.
3 - wish I still had it!

Jeff Ward told them the blue side panels looked like crap, when they showed him
the 88 pre production bikes,so they changed to green for over here. The US KX80's
in 88 and 89 kept the blue though.

Bought one of those new in '87. Was very disappointed with the bike. Forks were terrible. Motor would not turn any R's,but the low to mid was decent. My old '83 YZ250 would run away from it in a heads up drag race. Then my neighbor came over with his new '87 CR250, and one ride on that bike made me realize what a mistake I had made with the Kawasaki purchase for the year.Unsure

Actually the '86-'87 ran pretty decent with a bit of port work, bigger carb and a PC pipe. It was too choked down in stock form but came to life with a few simple mods. That's why I suggest welding the KIPS open, the bike has enough low end without them.

Have you personally seen this done with reasonable success? I was thinking about it as a last resort, but wasn't sure how much bottom end I would lose.

.......still holding out for the proper parts. Thanks again for the links & info!

Yes I have seen it done. The loss of bottom is negligible even with the exhaust port raised a bit in order to gain some top end. Hell, I've even seen the valves put in out of time with the rack so that they are 180deg out, they don't run too good up top like that.

Not sure of your needs, but I believe Nightmare Racing has started to carry some more stuff for that era of Kawasaskis.

I know that they specialize in a lot of body parts (fenders, side panels, plates, etc).

I think the website is nightmare-racing.com

I had an '88 and '89 and loved them both.
It has already been clarified, but that is definately Lechien in '89.
I'm also pretty sure that picture was Daytona SX in '89. I attended and remembered watching Lechien rail the whoops wide open. His KX250 also had that clean factory "bark" and you knew it was perfectly tuned.

Looking forward to seeing your resto- Good luck!

Nightmare will be my source for bodywork and stuff, but didn't see many engine-related parts on their site.

I have been getting a few responses from the links in this thread, so things are looking up!

Negative... only the 1988 KX 80 had the blue side plates. I had an 1989.... it had green plates

I have an entire 1986 complete in pieces. I am not going to part it out but if you want the entire bike, I would work with you.

I believe UFO make high quality plastics still for 87 Kx's.
