I picked a nice one up Sunday and it really is a blast to ride. One thing I really would like to do is get some modern foot pegs on it, they are just to skinny and small. Anyone know what ones will fit and anyone know where I could get a new kicker or a bushing to keep it in place?

I've ground down KTM and aftermarket KTM pegs to fit. I've also been told the late model Yamaha Titanium fit with slight modifications.

As for the kicker a bunch fit so eBay and Mark's vintage sight is where you want to start. Just use Babbittt's parts site to cross reference what models fit.

Great bikes and I love mine!

I just milled off the extra width in my Bridgeport. You could do it with a bench grinder or hand held in a vice. I just happen to have the equipment to do it a little less crudely. Wink

Here is the set I did for my 81 CR250R but it is the same process for the YZ.

Wow! Look/Not sure but im thinking most big yz kickers fit that spline.
first do this. It might work if. K your kicker apart. go to Home Depot and get A spring assortment package. In that package there are spring that look like the one that pushes the little ball bearing out.It looks like a heavy duty version of a spring inside a clicky pen. Clean everything .Push one of those springs into the knuckle put the bearing in and the kicker back. Grease everything of course. Be careful not to shoot the ball bearing across the room and lose find it or worse don't shoot your eye out kid. I fixed a lot of kickers that way.Instead of buying a new spring you may be able to stretch the one in your kicker out a little bit. I have a 426 kicker. If you email me a pic of yours i can compare them.
If they are the same you can get an aluminum kicker from a newer machine

I was messing around in the shop and found out that my stock rmz 450 pegs went right on the 79 yz 400. I had to do just a touch of filing and I think I had to drill a tiny hole in the right peg for the stock yz spring to go into.

I ran across a blaster motor swap build while searching, the guy used an it 490 engine and he claimed a yz426f kicker worked just fine. That would be awesome if it will work out. Anyone heard any input before I order one to try? Thanks for all the input guys. I rode the horse last night and can't believe how much fun it is, mad respect for the old timers that ripped these things.

There is a kicker on Mark's vintage sight right now. Rob put a 80s aluminum kicker on that sweet 1980 yz 250 he built. Just be careful the old kickkickers will punch a hole in your case due to the local of the pinch bolt.

The kicker on my '79 YZ250 is forged steel, weighs 1.5 lbs ! Any idea what '90's alu model will fit on there ?

I think they will fit but, you will have to drill and tap the start shaft.

Nice find evo!!
I'm almost 100 % sure I bolted those pegs on a 79 YZ125 I had a few years ago.

What's the average cost of race worthy suspension set for these? I have a guy that is awesome with the modern stuff, close to home. Said he could build them if I could get the good parts and settings.

For the forks your talking racetech emulators $140, springs $120 and top out springs $40. Plus 15wt oil and seals. $50-60.

Out back you really want to do the full racetech deal. Piston kit $160, spring kit $200, seal head $40 and if it doesn't have a external ressy that is a good addition.

This is a huge improvement to the bike. If you are handy with a wrench the forks are easy. The shock requires a press and charging tool and some patients when building to get all the air out.

In a few weeks I'll have a set of fully setup front forks for sale (finishing up my 43mm forks) and a refreshing shock with new seal head and White Brothers reservoir.
