I am putting a Mugen top end on my 76 Elsinore (that build is in another forum trend), however I wanted to separate this topic as the focus is on the Mugen top end and not the overall bike. I can tell you I did try a GEM reed cage and while it made huge bottom to mid power (it actually had a little over rev too (134cc), but it wasn't enough for my riding style...I live to rev.

Has anyone with a Mugen cylinder on their 76-78 CR125 ever used either V Force 3 reeds or Mossbargar reeds? I have used both, but not with this particular bike. Mossbargar reeds are often overlooked, but I have had pretty good success with them on my CR480 & and 80 YZ125. The unknown for me is the Mugen top end with either of these reeds...I am using my Moto-X-Fox Proto pipe which is a shorty, and therefore it has a nice hit on the bottom. I have a Mugen reed cage, but I want to save it as this will be a slightly used raced bike (certain tracks a couple of times a year...not trying to beat the bike to death). I am using a either a 34mm Mikuni or possibly a 34mm El Blue Magnum carb (I have both, but a decision as not been made yet). Also the piston, I looking at either a Vertex or Wossner (so if anyone has used either with their Mugen top end I would love to hear from you). I know these questions are a long shot given the rarity of the Mugen parts, but I guess it's a chance I will have to take. Thanks, Mike

Joe,

That's a good question as I am unfamiliar with both of these pistons. I know there is one guy on Vital MX that uses Vertex with Mugen cylinders, but he is also using Mugen cylinders for the 90-91 CR125. I think Weisco has a piston that will work with the Mugen cylinder, what has been your experience...Mike

Also Joe,

When I get this motor sorted out I am taking your advice on the seat (I'm getting a 73-74 seat)...thanks for that tip too!

Steve Williams had Wiseco make a run of Mugen pistons. He was selling them on Mark's Swapmeet a while back. I would send it all to Millenium to make sure it is all clearance properly.

Worksmx,

Thanks so much for the kind offer and I may just take you up on it. As i stated earlier, right now I'm trying to assemble the right pieces. A Mugen piston would be out of the question as they are pretty much unotainable (if I had one I would not risk using it). I do have a Mugen reed cage but I think I am leaning towards using a Mossbarger 8 petal cage with carbon reeds as I have used them before and they really work quite good and they don't take away from the standard look of the Mugen reed cage like the V-Force 3's do. I also think I can use standard CR125 base & head gaskets…is that correct? If not, I may need to call upon your services there. Lastly, I'm going ot try my Moto-X-Fox Proto pipe first as I have invested in a alloy air box, but if I don't get the performance I want I may need a Mugen up pipe. Thanks again so much, Mike

WORKSMX - don't suppose you have a cylinder laying around you'd part with?

This beauty arrived today and I could not resist doing a mock up...It's a NOS Mugen cylinder & head but due to it sitting on the shelf so long it is going to have be cleaned up a bit. I think I can remove what appears to be the remains of tape on the cylinder head fairly easily. The cylinder paint is perfect, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to bead blast the cylinder (kind of shame since the paint is so perfect). I plan to leave the cylinder head black.

I made a really interesting and kool discovery...my Mugen top end came with the reed cage & Mugen reeds/gaskets, however this bike is going to be raced a couple times a year so I did not want to risk using the Mugen parts (except the cylinder/head). That said I was trying to decide whether to use a VForce3 or Mossbarger reed cage. I have used both with much success, however the VForce reed cage that fits is only 6 petals, while the Mossbarger is 8 petals. So I decided to go with the Mossbarger, we'll, while looking through the part numbers to order one on the Mossbargers site I discovered the Mossbarger reed cage for the 1980 YZ125G is the same part # as the 87 Honda CR125. I have a Mossbarger on one of my 1980 YZ125's, which happens to be torn down, so I took that cage and lone behold it is a match...(see below photos). For the moment this just saved me about a buck in a half. When I put the YZ back together I will use a VForce3 (I have never tried one on that bike), but the below Mossbarger is going on my Mugen cylinder...Now to sandblast the cylinder/paint the head/match a piston!

So I've not been on the Vital forums for a while now as I have been busy getting bikes ready to sell (while working full time during the day). Anyway, today I was finishing up the below 1980 YZ125 when my Mugen cylinder arrived and now it's installed (see below).

SWATDOC,

The Mossbarger part # is 08-100 (80-87 YZ125).

BB67,

No new updates as I'm in the middle of a move to the west coast, but once I get there and settled I plan to get it running. Mike

Mike, be careful using any other piston/rings than original Mugen, my understanding is that it may affect performance, the cut and material of the rings is what the concern always was.

Hey Joe, same bike as always just added the numbers and Mugen decal. It's a Cross up swing arm with 17 inch shocks. The top mount is stock.

Very nice!

I'm really going back and forth on whether to paint my Simons forks red like this, or keep them the standard yellow.

What rear tire are you guys running? Most of the rears I see in a 4.10-x18 are about 12 pounds. I did find a Duro HF355 that supposedly weighs about 8 pounds, but it's listed as a cross-country tire, so not sure how it would do on a med/hard MX track.

Swatdoc,

I run a Cheng shin 4.10x18, but I'll have to look into the Duro. I like the Cheng Shin because it's soft and works really will in many different types of terrain conditions. I currently have my bike set up for post vintage racing, which I'll probably try when I get out west to CALVMX, but eventually I'll probably have the rear shock swingarm mounts pushed back and get the 75 seat for 77 stance Steve Simons used back in the day, but for now I want a little more travel for jumping.

I like the red legged Simon's. Are these the 9" travel models?

So all these pictures have me wanting a Mugen top end for a 76 project I have pending. Anyone know of a source?
