I loved the 4 speed transmission of my 85 YZ490 and was thinking of putting the 4 speed in my 88, the question is do I need do get a hold of the 85 cases as the 4 speed uses 2 shift forks and the 88 uses 3 forks, can it be done with the newer cases? Thanks any input is good

As far as I know it all fits as the cases look identical from the 82 490 up until the WR500. There is a couple of minor differences but nothing that I would imagine would effect the gear box. I put an 83 bottom end in my WR while I was rebuilding the WR bottom end and I hated the 4 speed, It always seemed like I could never get the right gear.

I feel that way when I geared down my 88, went back to 14/48 and it seems pretty good, I know the 85 used 14/46, I think I'm gonna try it, btw I've been riding my 490 a lot lately and the carbon scoop holds up well, thanks for the info and scoop!

I had a 5 speed IT490 gearbox in my 82 YZ490. When the gearbox shit itself, i put the 4 speed back in. For me, the bike was much better in the bush with the 5 speed. (The bike had been used by a previous owner in the Oz enduro championships with the 5 speed fitted).

No Pete I didn't kill that tranny you sent me, as a matter of fact that is the best shifting 490 I ever had! I liked the 4 speed but you're talking me out of it, I guess I'm bored, hopefully see you at wick Sunday!

You're welcome, I'm glad to hear it's still holding up, the scoops I have on my bikes here still look like new, I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, I wanted them to look exactly like OE and I think that was accomplished. I need to get more made.
