1992 Peak Pro Circuit CR125 Build

Tell me about it!

I've got a big carrier bag full of tiny little honda bags in my garage.

When the bike was built, a mate asked me what was new. It was easier to tell him what was still original.

Frame, swinger, fuel tank/tap/cap, engine cases, a handful of gearbox parts, engine cases, carb, and the swingarm spindle.

Makes you wonder if you really need a bike to start the build in the first place.

Imagine you'll be in a similar position once finished?

Haha exactly!! Frame/subframe, some gearbox parts, centre crankcases, kickstart shaft, some carb parts and rear wheel spindle, although all had plenty of work to make them like new.

It's a little different building them our side of the pond too. There's not quite the same selection of bikes, and we have no dry states to buy from.
You're pretty much guaranteed to be starting with the best turd you can find, then throwing thousands of pounds worth of Honda's finest at it.

I'm assuming you're going for a number one on top to tidy up once you're done pulling your hair out tracking down hens teeth and rocking horse faeces?

Yep you got it 100%! Our winters (and summers!) are too wet to keep bikes looking new for that long. The radiators I bought from the USA are almost new, but they don't stay that good for even a year over here before they're stained and beaten up from the harsh conditions... Yup #1

Forks are finished! Almost just sprayed the fork feet satin black like all other restos ive seen but didnt want to cut any corners. My buddy and i worked through them and removed the fork feet, gave them a light bead blast then had them hard anodised. Luckily as the forks were basically new they came off and refitted with ease.

Had new genuine Honda seal kits and had fork caps anodised red so they all looked as the original Peak bikes. Its started to take a bit of shape now!

More Phil Denton Engineering goods! HRC drilled aluminium washers for Radiators, Exhaust and Front fender with collars. Titanium HRC Engine mount bolts, all as the team used in 92. Also correct 92 front caliper back from vapour blasting after being notified the one I had wasn't period correct!

Nice.

The longer of those engine bolts was NLA when I built my '91 125 earlier this year.
I've got a stainless bolt in there, but now have bolt envy.

Yeah that was one of the reasons I had these made tbh! Both were NLA when I tried to buy them, and wasn't going to have copies made of the original if I was going to that much effort! Stainless did cross my mind at one point but bit the bullet and went Ti...

Noticed in pictures my buddy sent of the 92 bikes at PC, their end tanks on the radiators are seam welded, so off mine went to GMX for the same treatment. Love how theyve turned out!

NOS Rad louvres and overflow hose/clip. All new mounting hardware too with HRC drilled washers by Phil Denton Engineering!

Just broke up from work until 5th jan so hoping for some big progress whilst im off Smile

Nice build! Too bad you couldn't score an aluminum fuel tank as that really would have completed the package. Great job!

Thanks bud. Ive had plenty of opportunities to buy an ally tank but they didnt run ally tanks at all so would be no good for me.

GOOD news is, i've just located and purchased a NOS 92 125 tank!! Chuffed to bits!! The holab refurbed one i had done is good but you cant beat a brand new one Smile the guy lives in spain and hes bringing it over to Telford show in february for me!

Wow Chuck, for some reason I recall seeing one of those Peak bikes with an aluminum fuel tank years ago...just don't remember where I saw it. I know "On the Line" racing made an aluminum tank/frame, but I distinctly remember one of the Peak bikes with one on it...oh well. Great job just the same!

Chuck, are you sure they still run Sun Rims in 1992? I´m pretty sure i read at the "Motocross Action" Issue from May 1992 they run DID Rims in 92. The Rims on the Peak at PC.Showroom look also different to me. Check the Rim at the area where the nipples located. (Sorry for my bad english skills)

Rob, yes i've been discussing a lot of details with Shane Payton (Mitch's nephew) and they ran the Sun rims in mainly 91 and some points in 92 just not sure at which races. You're correct the rims on the bike in the showroom are DID's but that doesn't mean that's what they ran throughout the year. Also don't believe everything the magazines say as we've figured out along the way haha!

They also fitted new Sun rims to the 92 bike they restored for McGrath recently (the stolen recovered one) so that was a good enough excuse for me!

BTW your english is great, much better than my almost non existent German speaking ha.

Also the guys at Buchanans confirmed this too, although they said they were constantly rebuilding wheels for Mitch, always with Buchanan spokes whether it was with Sun Rims or DID rims...

They were the ones that first pointed out to me the ones in the showroom were DID rims as they're dimpled rims (where the spokes come through), and they've only ever produced non-dimpled rims Smile

Anyone looking for a Team Peak Jersey? Pretty good condition and only worn 6-7 times. Some light dirt stains.

Hey Chuck, this is an absolutely fantastic build you have going on here, your attention to detail is top drawer.
I have just got home from a trip to the states, while I was there I visited PC and checked out the bikes on display. I was particularly interested in the Peak Hondas, while looking at them I noticed that Brian Swink's bike had an alloy tank while MC's had a plastic one. I'm not sure whether they ran the alloy tank at any races but it looked used with a couple of dings and scratches in the blue paint.
I have a couple of pictures if your interested, they aren't close ups but you can see the alloy tank when you zoom in.

Thanks bud its getting there now! Yeah originally Troy Lee painted all the tanks every week in 1991 but i think later during the outdoor nationals they began running blue painted ally tanks which lasted longer. In 1992(the bike im building) they only ever ran a white stock plastic tank so thats what ive gone for...

Pics will still be great to see though!

I've just looked at the photo I took again and they have the 91 and 92 bikes on display, you are correct the 91 has the painted alloy tank and the 92 has the white plastic tank.
Sorry I didn't get any close ups, the bikes are all so close together, and I had my wife nagging me to get going......but here is the one that shows them together.
