What's up Rory?

Rory's bikes have always been sources of inspiration for my bikes. Especially the WR500.

Rory,

yeah, true stroy. I remeber seeing your WR on bikepics back in 2006 (?), just when I began the restoration of mine, and THAT was how I wanted my WR to look. Right after that, we got to talk, if I'm correct...

Everything is fine down here. Hope you are okay.

yeah that was the year that i brought it back from the dead, it had caught fire at one point, I wanted one since I was a kid, just like Bradshaw's.
I'm good just wide open getting this last 490 finished so that I can ship it to Ireland next week and then on to Farleigh, we will have 7 Air Hammers this year.

Throttle jockey do all of ours for the team, they have all the templates to do them because they measured them off of our plastic, they also have fenders, tank and swing arm templates for trim kits.

That bike looks like one that was on Craigslist the other day.

I'm going back to the used moto parts place Friday night for more odds and ends for my '80CR125R project. They have a 490 roach available with front disc. I'll report back what year and take it from there. Good to know they can be made to run with a few head machining mods. If it were a 465 it would be mine already. Did anyone ever fit a smaller tank and regular seat ? I'm just not a fan of safety seats on older bikes.

I ride a 1988 and love it, they don't like tracks with tight turns and lots of jumps but they are fun on more natural style tracks, I cut the vibration down on my 490 to cr500 levels and I raised the compression and still got rid of the pinging with some minor jetting and race fuel, I did have some tranny problems but Pete24 helped sort those out, I think it's a good bike that good a bad rap, Jeff Stanton rode an 88 pretty good, and Kurt lungquist raced the 89 world championship on one, if you go on YouTube to the 1989 motocross des nations there is some good footage of Kurt on the 490
what did you do to the tranny ? every old bike mag review i read complains about the shifting on every model yr

I blew third gear at the beginning of the season, got a used transmission form pete24 and I skimped out and just replaced third gear, I should've replaced the whole transmission, but wanted to save parts, later on I blew fourth gear, so I went through the whole transmission and had no problems since, I wanna say thanks to pete24 for keeping me on track, he knows a lot about yz490's, I wanna also say they can be jetted correctly even if you raise the compression, if you have any jetting questions I will try to help you

She very much is. I have a '94 YZ250 with an Ohlins kit and she did the Bradshaw/Emig '93 team graphics -- great price, super service and done in like a week. The bike is still being built but I have the proofs she sent me somewhere.. GREAT company

Several aftermarket companies used to fab contraptions like this

Nowadays the transmission internals can be polished and/or cryogenically treated. Even on newer bikes either of these can make a big difference. Cryo allows the grain of the metal to align which not only reduces friction, but also strengthens the gears.

>I wanna also say they can be jetted correctly even if you raise the compression,

Back in the day there was a head mod (to the squish band? I'm getting too old) that supposedly, was the cure for detonation and helped clear up jetting.

VMX magazine did a cover story on an '83 YZ490 a couple of years back which is very informative. One of the boutique aftermarket pipe makers developed a pipe in conjunction with flowing the motor for that cover bike. The determination was that the underlying issue was over-scavenging by the stock pipe (the head mod mitigated this somewhat but did not eliminate).

They put together a pipe that addresses the issue, supposedly completely ending pinging and detonation. I think this approach would be sound for any large displacement 2 stroke air-cooled bike-- develop the pipe around flow data.

On a side note, it's kind (well-- it really actually is) -- a bit of a thread hijack, but this was the basis of the K-Rae graphic kit, again she was wonderful & copied it exactly for my YZ250- Ohlins project

the sep 1991 of Dirt Bike mag has a article where Race Tech and Paul T. tried to turn a WR500 into a motocrosser.....they ported it......new pipe......some kinda mod to the shifter and or new shifter to deal with tranny issues.....exactly what was never discussed in the article.......and of course a complete suspension do over

the result according to DB was a mixed bag......better bike but still no motocrosser

i wrote to Race Tech to see if they still have what ever it was they did to the shifter ......is available.....have not heard back yet

other mags in the day report that using a YZ250 shift lever helps out.....as the 250 lever is slightly longer

Oh sorry, I didnt do anything to the transmission but make sure everything was correct, it must have worked because my bike shifts pretty good now, although sometimes it does bulk on full throttle shifts, I think pete24 had one of those race tech shifters, and I don't think it worked that well

That 83 on the cover of VMX was my bike, Eric at Pro-Form made the pipe and it totally transformed the bike, the power was way more linear and the pinging went away, I run it on 110 octane race gas but i did when it had the stock pipe too, a year or 2 later I put a flatslide carb on it and that spread the power out even more. With Our Team International Air hammer bikes they are all 86-90 490's that have the center port motors but Eric built us pipes for those also and they work really good, all those bikes were ported by Tom Morgan so between the his work and the PFR pipe, the bikes run great. I still race that 83 in AMA VMX and Midwest VMX, I love that bike and it's funny once in a while I'll get the you ride a 490 lecture from somebody and I'll let them ride it and then they usually have a confused look on their faces and then say that they want one.

Awesome! That was a great article! It's a shame Yamaha never stuck with developing the bike -- even the trail-bike IT490s have a huge cult following to this day. To think that a pipe change could have made such a difference.
