hi Guys, looks like i have a waterpump leak. the right side case is like new. completely rebuilt the engine last season , all new seals included.

my engine guy is suspecting a worn impeller shaft. i think maybe the seal is installed backwards (ive heard this from other posts). the leak is coming from the bottom weep hole.

would anyone have a extra water pump shaft for sale? the attached fiche is for an 87' the picture is one out of an old 86' that i have laying around.

thanks
curt

Have you actually looked at the condition of the '87 shaft? There are other leak paths. I think that is one of the years that has the magnesium alloy side cover? What condition is it in?
On my '83, I left off that #18 flat washer behind the impeller. The cap nut, #15, couldnt tighten down on the sealing washer, #16. That caused a small drip through the weep hole.
From what I remember, the oil seal rides on the shaft diameter, not the water seal. But, mines a little different.

Good luck! Here's what I found when I opened up my '83!

Always sand shafts before installing with new seals to give them a fresh surface to seal against. Start with something in the 200-300 range for badly used shafts a 600+ for good looking shafts.

Good luck!

yikes that looks pretty bad, my engine sat in a crate for about 20years with no coolant in it. it is in "like new"condition. i have still been thinking of getting the 88-89 aluminum case, maybe later this season. the shaft is shot, dealler says there are 3 in stock for 78.00. so off to the honda shop this morning.

Can also switch to Evans waterless coolant...that's what I'm doing...here's the between pic with the corrosion cleaned out and final pic with JB Weld applied, cured, and sanded. It seems to be holding up...no leaks... When I cleaned out the corrosion, there was a hole in the case between the water pump side and the oil side. Only a layer of corrosion was preventing a leak.

finished!
