I'm looking at buying a 1985 YZ 125 that is all original and for sure needs a restore. What level of restore is unsure though. The bike looks to be a good candidate for a race bike but it definitely has a lack of available parts for it. Also I have never restored a bike or anything else for that matter. So what would be your thought on this project ??? Thanks

that is a very undesireable old roach that wont get out of its own way, refuses to shift under the little power it makes, has yamahop and shitty forks, and if it actually went fast the brakes would suk even worse, but for some reason there are a few tired soles that like them , there is a chance i fall into that category , i say spend boy spend, here is a slow old roach i threw way to much money at for an incentive for you to do the same

Ah.. the 87 YZ125... my first "big" bike. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it.
Good looking restoration there Pete.

Thanks Pete.Mine is a 1985 though as compared to your bike which is newer. Right off the bat I'm missing these parts that I can see. Complete gas tank, complete pipe and silencer, air filter and cage, complete seat, right side (clutch cover) complete fronr master cyclinder and lever ,and that's the big stuff. I could also use a PDF file of the Yamaha Service manual also ,This is going to be a racer/rider.Not a museum bike, I can't afford that Pete.if any one can assist me that would be good. Thanks

Nicko, i have the 83 model YZ125 which i raced back in the day. In my opinion, they were a great bike. Unfortunately, the reviews i have read about the L and N have been pretty negative. Looking at your pics, the N needs a bit of work so you may be able to build yourself a decent racer. The K, L and N were very similar bikes, but parts are slightly different between the 3. I have lots of rebuild pics, workshop manuals, idea's etc.. on my website for the 83 K here... http://yz125k.weebly.com/

I had one as a teenager and thought it was much better than the 83 yz100 it replaced but I was only riding trails and sand pits at the time and not doing any motocross. Didn't remember any transmission problems only having to replace the power valve drum assembly because the threads wore out.

Well bike is almost done, I'm still looking for a usable good pipe. I met and made a friend in the process.Brian Fedigan from MXRestoration
Thanks to him it went much better than it would have.

Class of 85. Sweet ride man. Almost anything can be made sick fast, relatively speaking. Liked the look of the White and Red Yamahas. I have an 85 RM125 and would like to take it to the next level. Its your canvas....

Bike really looks nice!
In 1985 I had a new RM125,,,pretty but a dog for power compared to the KXs that I wanted my sponsor to get for me,..he got a 'deal on the left over RM,,so I was stuck with it.
My neighbor got his new 1985 YZ125 same time as I had the new 1985 RM125..I rode his and knew why both of our bikes where "left-over" at the dealers and discounted late into spring of 1985...CR125s did almost everything great,,the KX was the motor of the 125 class. I ate enough roost to never forget.
I later switched too 2 1985 kx 125s to race the a couple years later,,even though they where a couple years old then- they still where competitive and powerful 125.. . In that time frame I also had a 1985 CR125,,,it was a all around nice bike, re-sold it before I raced ,faster than the RM,,but not as much as KX.
Does any of this mater now...not really....sometimes we fix things up cause they catch our eye and simply look cool or a challenge. I have another 1985 Rm125 I want to restore,,,buying a part here and there for a couple years...even though I know it'll get smoked head to head with a 1985 CR125, and other 125s in my garage....but it was a piece of my youth so why not.
Even 1985 YZ125s need a little love! ANd you most certainly gave yours alot !!!!!! Great work!!

Thanks RIV187, Your comments and story made me laugh because 1985 was my last year I raced and I was in the Novice class. The bike I had back then was in fact a KX125.Loved that bike,Eric Gorr ported my motor when I believe he was working for TUFF Racing. Bike ripped. I remember that well. Eric Gorr has done my cyclinder this year on both my bikes.Technoligy has come a long way since then.My 85 has some work done to the suspension but not the works for sure. I only slightly disagree with you in that it does matter , because it's a good memory. I think that's a cool thing. ThanksSmile

Eric has done the work for many shops!
The pair of 1985 KX125s I had in 1987 where night and day different. #1 was a "Barr Competition" bike used by Mike Jones(AKA Mad Mike) in his team green days. It was fast with a very wide power band for a 125. Stiffer suspension settings. Mike I was told holeshot on it at a 125SX in 1985 as he traveled around the 125sx series that season with it.. Was stock looking other than a little b/c on torn seat cover and engraved in head.
Bike #2 was a bone stock. I install a bright colored new TUFF seat cover,,,and raised the exhaust port some when I freshened it. This made it hit harder up top and a sacrifice to down low....stock suspension.

Day came to sell them and I advertised them both $800 each in one add. A Dad brought his son out and he test rode both....Dad said which one? Son said definitely want the Tuff racing bike...it looks cool and rips...Smile The Dad knew the history of the B/C bike and Mike was a local hero in Pa/WV area I lived in...but his son insisted that TUFF racing seat bike was faster.
Bling sells.... Of all the 125s I've owned...wish I had that #396 B/C one back.
Here's a picture of me on that bike...Beaver Valley PA,,C class with Mikes pro # plates. When I unloaded I had several people ask if Mike was there....When I went to start line for practice I saw fear in other riders eyes....after practice a official had to chew me out for leaving Mikes number on when I was C class...it was disgracefull to Mike...LOL.

Bent, That is Awesome. I tried to use the 1983 Yamaha Wrech reports but obviously the motors are different enough that it would not work. Thanks very much. I going to try and find that issue.May 1985 correct.?

Riv187, Right at your story.True as far as I can remember.1985 KX 125 that I had Again with Eric Gorr motor was the last year I raced in the Novice class, yeah I sucked pretty bad.Never raced beyond that year.1986 my school mate who was an expert in the 125 & 250 class blew up his YZ 125.He called me and asked if he could race my year old KX . Sure just don't blow it up on me.He was going to a different district to race that weekend and the track was mostly sand.He wins both motos on my old KX and the second and third place guys also on 1986 KX's had there sponsor there who approached my friend and asked if he wanted to have there motor guy build him a bike.To which my buddy asks him"why would I want your engine guy build me a motor when I just smoked both your boys on an older bike that doesn't even belong to me". He's good enough to say that and get away with it.Great bike, but this YZ motor can be made to keep me entertained.LOL. Thanks for sharing that.Bent I'm going to at least get a screenshot of the posting.

Why can't magazines have tech articles like this anymore? Now all they have is buy this $1k pipe and your bike will be awesome...
