Just got a new project. It is now stripped down to the frame and ready to powder coat. I can not wait!

I think I was more comfortable on my H model than any other bike I ever raced .
Got mine from Kenny Keylon (still in the crate ) when he got his factory Honda ride .
And won a championship in my class against all those '82 s .

LOLLaughing

Pete has NOS gas tanks on his bikes. No way can I compete with that! I do tend to put myself in the poor house on occasion.....okay, often!

Like that guy here with the Ferrari once told me, we're here for a good time, not a long time.

My YZ looked about three times as bad as Ardfarkl's when I started. But I'd driven 150 miles to get the pile based off fuzzy Craigslist photos, no way was I coming back without it.

the great thing about these old yzs is you can still get just about any part for them, one way or another.
what s the best rear suspension mods for these .mine currently needs servicing and i am thinking i may as well just put the money into a new unit.

Sage Suspension has rebuilt one vintage YZ shock and two Full Floaters for me. The price was right and the shocks have performed like new.

TWo more questions.

One, who does GREAT engine work. Looking to build a top level racer.

Also, I have seen that RAce TEch offers rebuilds for this model with a simulated gold valve, etc. My buddy is a Race TEch suspension guy. Who out there does more than just a rebuild? HAs anyonme had the Race Tech set uip I am talking about and was it worth it?

I have 465 with the full set-up with Emulators in the forks and a RT built shock. I had a Gold Valve/Emulator stocker too. Check out their website, that's my bike they did the R&D on for the shock. The ride is amazing. Aside from frame and fork flex compared to modern bikes it is crazy good. Good hook up, no swapping and sticks really good in the turns and feels really balanced. No Yamahop or anything goofy going on. you can't go wrong with Race Tech.

The race tech parts are worth the money, i install both fork
and shock valve kits

You have to stay away from the 1/8 id hose and
resevoir kits
not enough flow
the stock hose ID , close to 8mm(.300)

I did theRace Tech emulators up front and sent my shock to them. It came back really pretty...and worked awesome. Spendy for sure...but the old adage..."Speed costs.....how fast you want to go?"

I'm not completely sure but Yamaha may have had Wrench Reports for the 81 bikes where they had porting specs and other modifications they worked out through the race team. Does your bike have 5 or 6 gears. I had a 80 and 81 and I thought I remember 6 gears

Replace all the steel hardware, steel handlebars, remove kickstand
mount, internal hub spacers(1 lb each ), kicker with later aluminum model,
axle hardware, seat brackets, exhaust mounts. A savings about 10lbs
can be made
brake stay arm
brake cable pin
etc....

I believe the 1979 YZ250F model was the only year of the 6-speed and it wasn't great as reviewed by the magazines back then. G & H models went back to 5-speeds.

Using the dual-leading shoe front brake set up off of the YZ465H is a good addition for racing.

my 1980 has a 6-speed, so does my spare engine 3r4 prefix vin

The Dirt bike 81 250 shootout states a used 1980 YZ was brought along
for comparison ,was faster than all the 81 makes and models in a drag race.

Plus the 81 H had about 6lbs plus in weight added?

Have to check tonight but I believe mine was a 5

the 81h has the same gearbox as a 465 h
same
clutch
kicker
shift shaft
clutch cover
most internal part as a 465

check for hairline cracks in your clutch basket
and partial shearing of the back kick gear on basket(small gear)
a common problem on the 465.(where the gear is pressed into
the basket.(the drive cog) that mates to the large primary od gear.)
i have found 2 out of 6 with this problem
and 1 with cracks(80 250 G basket) on my own
bike( during reassembly) lucky i caught that .
it was a low hour bike too!

You are correct....microfiche shows F & G with a 6-speed.

The mind fades with age....that's my excuse. And I am sticking to it.

Thanks for the correction rob.

I would not recommend Back in the Day. Long expensive story on my 79 rebuild.
On the flipside of that I would highly recommend Eric Harvey at Vintage Norcal Racing.

I know dual leading shoe brakes work when set up but I can't say I have ever seen more than one that was working right.. I would rather have a normal front brake and just keep up on that
