Hi
After finishing already restoring the rm80 1980 and kx80 1980 ,i have started a couple of months ago with the yz80 and the cr80 still remains in storage to get done after
The idea is restoring the four 80cc mini bikes of 1980
i will post some pictures of before and after of both rm and kx and of the yz restoration in progress

All plastics been used in this restorations are NOS or in some cases originals restored , nothing at all is aftermarket
even the tires are nos from 1980 ,all seat covers are originals too
The RM80 and KX80 decals are specially replicated by www.bdesigns.ca ,the best designer for any vintage custom decals in Canada ,the YZ80 tank decals are replica too ,side panels number 80 decals are NOS
All cylinders are NOS ,with the exception of the YZ80 that is the original with new Yamaha Std piston and rings
All hardware have been zinc plated and chromated in original colors by me ,all paint has been powder coated
RM and KX tanks have been professionally painted and the inside recoated by www.fueltankservices.com the best liner service in Florida
The YZ tank was restored by me ,after long hours of sanding and polishing
I hope you all enjoy them the same i do and i will be posting more pictures soon

Thanks for the thread, the attention to detail is just amazing. And that little CR is going to make for a great resto, it's pretty damn nice as is.

Share some details on your zinc plating setup. I have a load of stuff to do but it's a pain getting it all sorted and shipped. Would like to be able to do it at home.

Great job!
The 1980 and 79 YZ share more parts than the 79/78
The bottom ends interchange
For some reason Yamaha die cast new clutch, ignition covers just for 1980, but they bolt on the 79
frame same /except for side plate mounts
I never take many photo's of builds, and it always takes more time than you estimate
4-6 months

Fantastic work! Restoring old minis is really cool.

Wow Rob....great work! I too had a 1980 CR-80, and can't wait to see what you do with it! Since it lacked in the suspension department vs. the competition, I dreamed of being able to buy a set of longer S&W rear shocks, a DG swing arm, and gold radial head. But, my small lawn service at 12 years (cut 2 neighbors yards, and a business down the road) old couldn't swing it! What are you doing with these masterpieces after you done?

I modified the suspension, so i can ride it, new springs, new fork lowers, new rear shock, with correct springs, valving, new wheel assemblies with 8 gauge ss spokes

Working on another 79 YZ80 now

Hi
I am using the Caswell copy cad zinc plating kit system for 3 gallons ,i started with the 1.5 gallon one but i realize that for wheel axles and other larger parts worked better
Is not and easy job but after some tries and errors i finally learned it and like u said ,for us is great cause u could work on small batches at a time ,cause is a lot work to prepare the parts before plating
What i recommend is to chromate the parts after they are zinc plated ,they will give a nice finish and more protection ,Caswell has blue ,yellow and black chromates that are really easy to use ,u just dip the part on the solution and thats it

Hi Rob

Great work too that u doing on that yz80!!
like u said on the 1980 model my ignition cover is some type of plastic ,i was lucky to found it NOS ,but the clutch cover is aluminum
they do share a lot of parts in between the 1979 and 1980 model
