I believe that yours came from Woodland Washington, correct?
How hard was it to fit the big engine to the 250 frame?

Get Karl to make you a Tripes works replica one if you have plenty of time to wait.
Hey Frog you did an Awesome job on your bike, I really love the 70s and 80s Honda's especially the works bikes. I tried to make all my bikes look like the works bikes.
But for me you missed it with the black wheels and the 1979 CR 125 tank. I guess I'm just really old school, I just don't get the black rims , not even on the new bikes, and when it comes to 70s and 80s Honda's I definitely think they should only have two colors, Silver or Gold.
I'm looking to build and restore a 78 - 80 CR 250 my self, I really like the 78-79s except for that big fat round gas tank, don't get me wrong even with that tank I still love those bikes , but I think the 1980 CR 250 gas tank is by far the best looking tank from the 78-80 era.
In 1979 I almost bought a new CR 125 , I really loved how much they looked like Marty Smiths 1976 Type 2 RC125, excepted for the small slanted tank and that goofy looking 23'' front wheel.
I saw a guy at a vintage race a year ago with a 79 CR125 with a 21'' wheel and he put one of those RC tanks for a 76-78 CR125 and it looked Awesome.
Any way I hope it doesn't sound like I'm bagging on your bike, I love all old Dirt bikes, especially Honda's and I know not everyone can have the same taste and likes, that's spice of life. Cheers buddy great bike !!!
Here's a couple of pictures of the 79 and 80 works Honda's both with the same style tank that came on the stock 1980 CR250.
I'm sorry I just get a little jingle in my junk when I look at these works Honda's from this era.
cool bike!
Who built the bike? I know the was a guy who built a few on the east coast, and sold 1 on ebay a number of years back
and he did the 81 swingarm like yours.
There was at least 150 hours of machining done to this bike(built in a machine shop)
every part was modified, hand made almost all the bolt's,components on the bike, bushings, hand formed chain guide
hand machined ti shock, foot peg, engine bolts, ultra strong 1.0 dia flange ams4640 shock bushings, hand matched
super smooth pivot action, ultra trick floating brake set-up, ams4640 floatbushing's , trick aluminum spacers
remounted the tank, way to much to list, or even remember
Yes, check for proper swingarm/chain/roller/ brake rod clearance before you ride.
Remove your shocks, and check for proper clearance on full swingarm travel (up)
I had issues when I built my Marty tripes Replica( both arms)
Pit Row
Got the little 1980 CR125 today finally.
Rob Boucher I see you fabbed up your own swing arm, I want to go same route
and need some info / specs. if possible ?
Main concern is wall thickness, material spec when raw, and what your stress relieve / HT
post welding process was. Also wondering about keeping the bushes lined up after HT.
I would think they were refaced / bored parallel and concentric on the Bridgeport.
i hand machined 6 (2x)adjustable fixtures for the pivot, axle, shock
mounts. to heat treat 6 swingarms at a time( save $$$)
plus brake stays Running the ovens that size and quench tanks set up
you are not going to find just anywhere, alot of the shops have closed there doors
but lucky here in MN we never really had a downturn
.125 wall 6061
Heated treated to 6061 T6 900 plus degress 8 hours, quenched, 12 hours or so , baked aged/stress relieved/
I had a local heat treat shop do the work. The foreman is a old moto guy,
I would have to look at paperwork to get specifs
just from memory, I just dropped it off, and picked it up.
and all the bores were fine.
I made up a dozen or so Suzuki twin shock arms the last batch, working on YZ 's right now, billet
goodies, and maybe a OW works style arm, i have to make a adapter to my swingarm fixture
for the correct triangulation point, should be a challenge.
Hope to see you at a race next year, Mark, and his son too!
Jon has nice bikes, and takes care of his rides
worth every penny, you could not build one for that!
My field in more tool and die, we run two small 6" in cube high heat ovens for
tools steels. If I do I fab I'll make a quickie fixture and just resize and check
bores after HT I guess. We have lots of aerospace guys around here that do all the
processes, know a few people. Could very well end up with a seriously bent out of
spec swingarm if al precautions are not taken.
I guess pulling the unit back to shape post HT is out of the question, will just spring
back or weaken right ? Is this something you would anodize natural color after ?
Thanks again for the great examples and info.
Sorry if this thread was highjacked.
Those big CR are for men, not kids !
MN is a good sport for XC skiing I hear, any snow yet. ? We got 8 in in the Quebec Laurentians so far this year, early.
