1/3/2008 12:04 PM Greg Toyama moved to Australia (Adelaide) in the early 80's. I had some great races with him locally in South Australia on 125's and 250's up until about '83 when he stopped riding to concentrate on a real estate career. I haven't seen him for years, apparently he's back in California. Great guy.

1/3/2008 8:16 PM My Buddy Tommy Luera had great battles with Greg Toyama in the 100 expert class Greg even protested him at a race.I built Tommy a 100 Elsinore couple of years ago using his original Hagg FMF 100 cylinder he used back in the day.He won the 100 class at the Elsinore GP last year on it.

1/21/2008 6:58 AM I rode mainly 125 Expert but dabbled in the 100 class at times, mainly in the Houston area. I won the NMA World Amateur MX Championship in the 100 (and 125) expert classes at Rio Bravo in Houston in '74.

3/26/2008 8:15 PM Hey Humyam,
Do you remember a guy named Sean Kelly (i think) from Texas . He used to race aginst Jeff Ward on his JWRP CR100. I remember as a kid in Australia I used to read Mincycle Action and used to idolise guys like him and Gene Mc Kay. What happened to those guys. I had Noguchi kitted bikes at home. YZ80 A's and B's. |

I'm always on the lookout for some more of those, currently restoring a few of the Jeff Ward Racing Products minis (C&J frames) right now with the help of Scott at the Vintage Factory. One will be a show bike with the fully kitted FMF boost ported 100cc cylinder and porky head, the other will be back on the racetrack after thirty years of being tucked away. It's gonna be sweet! Shaun Kelly is a personal trainer(?) in the Houston area last I heard. He used to kick Ward and Myerscough's asses at Rio in the mini classes. Myerscough came back to Rio in 2004 for our Vintage Pro-Am. He did a little ass kicking that day with a couple really good rides. That's who I idolized as a kid. |

Here is something that I always wanted to ask you: Remember Terry Horn? What do you know about his fatal accident, and did it have any affect on you back then? I still talk to Bailey about you to this day. |

3/27/2008 11:02 PM Harry Heinz owned about three mini-elsinores. He had two JWRP's and some other type (if memory serves correctly). Bullet Ben Theriot from Louisiana was considered a Rio local and he had a few mini-e's.
Sean Kelley was the king of Rio on those white-tanked Humble YZ's, but I remember a couple of SoCal guys giving him all he could handle in '76. s "Show me a guy who is afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat everytime."

3/27/2008 11:00 PM Some more:
O'Mara owned the 100 cc class at Indian Dunes. Toyoma's 100 would pull some 125's... s Chappy Blose was quick on a "sleeved down" J&B 100 Elsinore with a light blue tank. David Wood from Tennessee could be quick. Bill Hobson from Mississippi cleaned up around Canton and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Pedro Perales (EC Birt) from Tennessee. The Bigelow boys (Team Dynamic) were brutal. Billy Liles (Georgia) was a dynamo in the SE; same for Mark Murphy. Scooter Stafford (Louisiana) could put it down on a hundy. Sorry for rambling... 3/28/2008 7:42 AM My dad built Shaun's white white Humble YZ's. His YZ 60 in '75 was the trickest thing I had ever seen. The motor started as a YZ80. Cases were split and the crank was stroked. The final top end was the left cylinder of a TA125 road racer. The stock studs were repositioned to accept this cylinder. The TA125 was a twin with two separate cylinders and the fins on the left cylinder the flush. The pipe was patterened after the exhaust on the TA as was the carburation and ignition. Final displacement was NMA legal for the 60 class. Shaun's first NMA National on it was at Saddleback. He lapped the field up to second place and the bike spent the rest of the weekend in impound. We made him a pretty trick 100 out of an 80 also. We sold a bunch of the YZ60 replicas and Derrick Wedding got one. The motor was so exotic that they shipped it back to us after every race for examination.

I used to look up to you like a hero. WOW! I also agree with Kippy, Karl and Todd being on this list I think I also remember John Olten on them as well Don't forget Rocky Folsom and by the way, just so I'm clear, are we blaming Obama on this or not?

3/29/2008 3:55 PM around little rock and memphis in the mid 70s, nobody could handle tony wynn or gene mckay on 100s. of course, tony would ride just about anything with wheels. around 1974, i saw tony ride four expert classes in one day at wild cherry mx in calico rock, arkansas. a RM100, a CR125, a CR250 and a 501 maico. he broke all of them except the 250 and he won on it. dbm

I drooled over those white YZ's every year when we would trek to Tejas. Wedding was bad fast. His old man was a hoot. We were at a track in Texarkana (?) for a GNC qualifier (Astrodome) and seized a bike in practice. Derek Wedding drug me to his box van and yanked a very trick white YZ 80 (Bettor forks, etc.) out of the back and said, "race this, you can't beat me anyway." Good folks. If they couldn't beat ya, they'd damn sure protest ya. s "Show me a guy who is afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat everytime."

4/10/2008 6:38 PM We must know alot of the same people. Bill Hobson was always a class ahead of me and so was Scooter Stafford. I won the Dixie region 100cc class a couple of times in the late 70's, early 80's. EC Birt used to get pissed that our YZs could pass those RMs at will. He spent many a night at NMA races trying to get my mechanic to talk.
