Opinions?

I am going with Randy Rhodes. Died way too young, 25.

Matter of opinion, not fact, no?

and by the way, you're wrong.

Do you realize that you just opened the door for a bunch of old (my day was the best) rockers.

we've done this soo many times, but here goes

my opinion is Eric Clapton- he's go the songwriting and chops. Hendrix is amazing, but for everyday listening is just to much for me.

Duane Allman takes top american- a virtuoso who played with heart as opposed to Malmsteen Vai, etc

Jim, there's not a guitar player alive who measures up to the three I mentioned. Wait, Chuck Berry's is still alive, so he does.

and please, I'm not some guy who admires technical playing- I'm a three chord kind of guy generally. These guys are the best, no matter when they came out

Although I respect each and every one of those you listed. There are unemployed studio musicians that are every bit as good.

It's a bullshit question to begin with.

RR was good but there are so many incredible guitar player it's hard to pick one. Some that are high on my list along with Randy are Chet Atkins, Bryan Setzer, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Tommy Emmanuel, Eric Johnson, Gary Moore, etc, etc, etc.

it is a ridiculous question, but respectfully, you've lost your mind. Copying the licks and writing them are two very different things.

great, important music is, to me, impossible to define, but like Justice Potter Stewart famously said about pornagraphy-" I know it when I see it"

In 50 years, Pearl Jam will still be talked about and listened to while Creed will be an obscure trivia question. Think Gerry and the Pacemakers and the Beatles, or the Who and the Guess Who

I think you are the one that is crazy. The question is about one's ability when it comes to playing the guitar. If it's so superior then it's not easily copied. Writing is an entire different thing.

No, I think he was talking about the ability to play an instrument better than someone else.. Things progress in everything in our lives and the ability to play an instrument is no different. The older generation of estimators could not get a project out as fast and and as accurate as those like yourself do today. Do you think the old estimators are better than you?

no, John left the band in 92 because of drug problems and he said essentially decided to see how far he could go

1992–1997: Drug addiction
Frusciante developed serious drug habits while touring with the band during the previous four years. He said that when he "found out that Flea was stoned out of his mind at every show, that inspired me to be a pothead".[24] Not only was Frusciante smoking large amounts of marijuana, but he began to use heroin and was on the verge of full-scale addiction. Upon returning to California in the summer of 1992, Frusciante entered a deep depression, feeling that his life was over and that he could no longer write music or play guitar.[21] For a long time, he focused on painting, producing 4-track recordings he had made while recording Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and writing short stories and screenplays that dealt with a variety of motifs. To cope with his worsening depression, Frusciante increased his heroin use and spiraled into a life-threatening dependency.[25] His use of heroin to medicate his depression was a clear decision: "I was very sad, and I was always happy when I was on drugs; therefore, I should be on drugs all the time. I was never guilty—I was always really proud to be an addict."[26] Although he openly admitted to being a "junkie", his thinking had been fundamentally warped by the excessive drug use, believing drugs were the only way of "making sure you stay in touch with beauty instead of letting the ugliness of the world corrupt your soul."[27]

I've seen a lot of great guitar players, including Rhoads and Frusciante, but only two guitarists blew my mind when I first saw them play. Eric Johnson and Junior Brown.

That's my point. Fame and fortune have nothing to do with ability.

Jeff Beck.
Jimi Hendrix.
Eric Clapton.
SRV.
Maybe not in the same league as those other guys, but I like Carlos Santana, too.

Overall, though, I think Jeff Beck. His pure instrumental stuff is terrific.

Santana blew my mind when I saw him about 3 feet from me. I don't think there is another player that plays with as much heart or emotion than Santana.
