Hey vital, I'm wanting to build up a 1st gen toyota tacoma into a prerunner. I dont want to go all out, I'd like to keep it fairly basic. I'm not very educated on prerunners so just wondering what i should look for. Also wouldn't mind building it as a 4wd prerunner. Not wanting to go rock crawling or anything, just would be nice to have if im ever camping or whatever. Anyways, if anyone knows anything about prerunners id love for you to share your knowledge! Thanks!

Swap that 22R motor for a GM 4.3 liter V6. You can find numerous conversion kits online for a good price and those 4.3 motors are a dime a dozen at salvage yards.

Try All Pro off road (believe they are out of Hemet, CA) they might get you in the right direction in regards to your Tacoma project.

In regards to the GM 4.3 V6 conversion; would you swap a Turbo 350 or NV 4500 behind it? Know that's popular with the Jeep's. Would you do that if it was your Tacoma?

Taconation.com.

I have a 2004 crew cab pre-runner 2wd with a snugtop XTR.
I also own a 2008 access cab TRD 4x4 with a snugtop mid-height.

Both run Bilsteins, AP uca's, Wheeler's braided brakelines, ProComp sway bar ends. And, both are silver, so they look bitchen side by side.
I'm preparing to install a one-piece shaft on the '08 and will replace the cv boots with aftermarket AP's, as well as a carrier spacer.

If you want to go long travel ($$$) or 33" tires or bigger, you will need to build out the suspension. If you stay with 285's or less, you can get by with Billy's and a AAL on the rear.

Steer clear of strut lifts and rear blocks, as both are a waste and, frankly, dangerous. Max lift without substantial suspension work is 2.5 inches. You can go 3" without a full suspension, but ride quality goes to shit. I can go on and on vis-a-vis lift options. Feel free to learn from my past mistakes...

They are easy to work on, parts are cheap, and they run forever. My 04 has 170k. My 08 just turned 90k. PM me if you want more info. I love tacomas as much as scooters.

Have fun. Cheers.

^^^AP are good folks^^^. I run quite a bit of their stuff, including rear spring set. Quality stuff. Camburg in HB is also a player in the taco space, but they are pricey.

Harry_Gray, my quote function isn't working (Firefox issue perhaps?).

I'd look into using a 700R4. More streetability with the OD (better mpg's too). You'll need to find a good driveshaft shop and look into the mounts, but the 700R4 is the way to go.

I had a 2wd Tacoma a while back. I put the Camburg long-travel kit on it with sway-a-way coils in the front. I bought a lot of stuff used off of race-dezert and bartered for a lot of other things. My buddy got me a nice deal on tires from his pro-lite (32x11.5) and I pulled the rear bed sides to fit the tires. The bed sides looked pretty sweet pulled and no one was doing that with Tacoma's at the time. The truck was fun for a while, but I didn't really have the money to set it up to work well in the desert.

Total Chaos is probably the best bolt-on long travel kit for Tacoma's and Deaver makes a great leaf spring for whatever you want to do.
