My daughter just bought a $700 truck and lost the title before she could transfer it into her name. She also lost the phone number of the guy she bought it from. Any ideas? She just wants to get a 3 day trip permit over and over again but if she's caught she could get it impounded and lost forever. I'm thinking just part it out and re-buy another truck ... Help!

Did you try contacting your state DMV? Google search shows there are some options but vary from state to state..

Overal seems to be more simple with low value vehicles..

Does she still have the bill of sale? Im looking at buying a 72 nova with no title and here in NY you can bring in the bill of sale and receive a temp. nontransferable registration while they do a search.

no bill of sale, no phone, ex boyfriend paid the phone bill.
I think we'll be parting it out?

Call the DMV, or maybe even take the VIN to the PD, and get the previous registered owner's name. Go home, Google them and you can probably find a phone number. Call him and see if he'll file for a lost title.

Here in Washington, the State Patrol does vehicle inspections and I think that's the route.

Call the Police . They will run the VIN and contact the owner to verify your story

Usually seller has to do something to let the state know he sold the car. The problem with that though is it may not happen until he gets a renewal notice. Each state is different. Hopefully though he has already notified the DMV. Your daughter can go to the DMV and explain what happened. She will most likely have to pay a lost title fee which isn't very much.

Have her write you a bill of sale, then apply for a title. The DOL will then send a letter to the current title holder to let them know that someone else is attempting to register their vehicle. If the previous owner ignores the letter and you renew your conditional registration twice more, then you are able to get a full title. The conditional registration works exactly the same as a "normal" registration if you are pulled over.

Had this same scenario with a trailer I bought then accidentally threw away the paperwork.
