Don't think there is a moderate Muslim,they are either complacent with it all or scared of the radical side of their religion.
Most of the violence we see is the result of politics and the desire for more power, it's just that the Mullahs and now Caliph are smart enough to manipulate the little people into thinking it's a holy war and then the Koran can easily support this claim. My point is that those who instigate the violence and pull the strings don't really give a damn about the faith, but rather are power hungry opportunists. Without them, Islam is no better or no worse than Christianity.
Though there are millions of moderate Muslims in Indonesia, many are Muslim from being listed that way by the government. To be a citizen of Indonesia, you have to be registered as being a member of an organized religion. Many that are listed as Muslims are really a mix of Buddhist or Hindu and practice a little bit of each and are registered as Muslims, many for political reasons and are prominently have Javanese ancestry. This practice has been evident 1000's of years ago where there is evidence that the Brobudur Temple was shared by both Buddhist and Hindu religions. Christians in Indonesia are mostly of Chinese ancestry. Hindus live mostly on Bali and the island chains. It is interesting that they are kind of separated into regions via religion.
Arab Muslims that travel to Indonesia are of a different breed. Their sense of entitlement and just general assholeishness
is unbelievable. That is not just speaking of rich ones from Dubai but Iranian, Pakistani ect. It takes 2 seconds to see they are different. From my experience, I agree with what Hillbilly said about Arab Muslims and how they will never be peaceful. I don't know if it is the Arab in them or the Muslim or the combination of the two that make them the way they are but they are different than most Muslims in Indonesia for sure.
Ultimately, I'm afraid that Hillbilly will become more and more correct and that' s a shame because it wasn't always that way with Islam. Like I said, I'm no fan of it, but I recognize that in the past it did allow for periods of peace. I had a Jewish professor who grew up in Iran and had wonderful memories of it, obviously today's Iran is very different. The Ottomans also thrived under periods of relative peace. What about the nearly 3 million muslims living in America today, most who are anything but violent. Of course it's easy to point out exceptions and that doesn't mean specific examples of violence aren't useful, it just doesn't confirm that all Muslims are violent and will always be so.
For a counter-example, I've got a friend who is a political refugee from Uzbekistan who has a scar across his scalp from a sniper's bullet. He's extremely devoted to Islam, but he's also now a living symbol of the American dream. I met him when I was a waiter paying for my studies and he was a dishwasher with nothing. Through a huge amount of determination, he's put himself through law school; he loves America and everything it's allowed him to accomplish. He's now trying to use his success to better the situation in his home country.
I guess I'm just a little sensitive to huge generalizations, because it's not as simple as some people believe it to be.
