Gary Johnson and polling

10/21/2012 6:40 PM

It's starting to sound like Gary Johnson could have a pretty substantial effect on the Presidential election. According to some polls, he could pull as much as 5% of the vote - mostly the Ron Paul contingent of the Republican party. He would probably pull some votes from Obama as well, but Republican lawyers are working overtime to prevent him from getting on ballots, and failing that, from being able to effectively campaign in many states. Clearly, Republicans are worried about him in a very tight election.

It's hard to say how many people who vote for Johnson wouldn't have voted at all if he wasn't on the ballot, but the general theory seems to be that he pulls two Romney votes for every one Obama vote, except in Colorado where the number is about one-to-one.

It's an interesting development. Empircally, it seems to me that lots of Americans are disgusted with this entire campaign on both sides, and a protest vote might start sounding better all the time to them. We'll see.

Romney should be concerned about Johnson. He could very well be this year's Perot (no way he gets Perot type numbers though).

i've heard the Cowboys are going to be really good next year...

It's safe for Mitt and Obama here in OK. Gary Johnson and other's will not be on the ballot.

Land of the free? I don't think so.

I definitely don't agree with all of Johnson's positions, but I live in Texas so it really doesn't mattter much how I vote. Romney's taking Texas, that's a done deal - so I'm considering voting for Johnson just to send a signal to the major parties.

It sucks terribly that the two big cons-er parties-have America by the balls...such that we either have to vote for one of them...or vote for a third party which is really a vote for one of them.

Well, if enough people vote for a third party, it'll become viable and then...well, three parties will have America by the balls and you'll have to vote for one of the three of them.

If you're fed up then don't vote for the two majors.

Send a message, a valid third party certainly can't hurt you guys and there's next to no chance they'll get elected so if you don't agree with everything they stand for, all you're doing is sending a message that will shake up the existing system.

Empty a bag of skittles into the toilet and then flush. It's like watching a five second long nascar race.

I always vote for a "third" party for President. At least for the last 6 now. If a party gets a certain percentage, they are guaranteed a spot 4 years later. I'm pretty sure that Washington hasn't had any real close presidential votes in quite some time, so my vote seems more meaningful this way.

I voted for Johnson yesterday, but I haven't dropped off my ballot yet.

I voted for johnson as well. Seeing as a republican vote in CA means nothing anyways.
