Merc was on ultra soft. The faster tire.

Oh, absolutely. Even during the season last year, I feel that they weren't going all out. No reason to show their full hand in testing.

I think that after the race at COTA they should go to Road America for a comprehensive early test of the following seasons tires ... or wing rules... or tearoff testing... or decal application adherence ... or tire color ... or mirror/sun difflection test ....
