These lake effect storms are the weirdest thing , they form such a hard line that you can literally see the edge of the storm , i am 2 miles north of the storm and could damn near cut my grass right now , some towns have official measurements of 36 inches and its still coming down 3-5 inches an hour.

How long has the airport been shut down? Having been through Buffalo about 8 million times to clear customs, that place does get slammed with some nasty snow. Running west across 20 to head to Pa or Oh, I can remember driving 10mph in blinding snow, looking sideways out the windows to even tell if I was moving. Eerie stuff, so disorienting.

My guess is that its been closed since early this morning. Travel bans everywhere because people try to get to work and get stuck and they can't get the roads cleared now. I was able to see the edge of the storm from my backyard. They said if this storm stalls out it was gonna be a nasty one , could dump 60 inches before its done. These early season storms are so unpredictable because the lakes are still warm.

Can't remember what year it was, and I doubt it was the last, but one year the radio said they'd received 76" in one dump, so far, and it was still coming down. Brutal.

We were supposed to get it here in Erie, but it stayed on the lake.

That's a pretty funny picture.

The wife and I are supposed to go on a Bahama cruise in january so I'm hoping all of the nasty weather stays away from Fort Worth and New Orleans.

Another system is setting up and by the end of the day Thursday the totals could be 70+ inches (that's snowfall not drifts) , the scary part is the weekend when temps are supposed to be 60 ,flooding will be a real possibility. The news is saying a couple hundred cars are still stranded and the snow crews can't get around them to open the thruway.

12 deaths so far , my sled is out of commission or i would have been out checking on stranded cars. Snow sure does melt and it looks like with the warm temps this weekend its gonna melt as fast as it fell, the small creeks can't keep up with that much volume. I haven't been to work since monday , nobody can get in or out of the plant and all the vending machines are picked clean.

Always interesting when large snow falls are referred to as "killer storms". Yes, people do die but more people die of accidents on "normal" days and the snowfall puts a stop to these. Check out the figures.

The majority of the deaths were people with heart conditions trying to dig out their homes , one guy was found buried in his car and one guy was struck by a vehicle while trying to get someone unstuck when the storm first started. The news said that 30 buildings have collapsed so far . I think the rapid melt over the next few days is gonna be nasty.

Yes, that's a hell of a lot of water and if the thaw is quick flooding is on the cards.

There is certainly the potential for major flooding if everything lines up just right . The local creeks have flooded or reached their maximum capacity from much less.

My buddy sent me this one.

In the winter of 2013 we had a blizzard/nor'easter that hit Connecticut and dumped 4 feet overnight and it screwed up everything. I was stuck in my house for 4 days and it took about a week for things to return to normal. Can't even imagine what you guys must be going through with snowfall like what you are getting. This kind of thing is no joke, especially when there is little warning.
