I was watching something on TV a couple nights ago and they had a segment on the fastest autonomous electric car. The company's name is NextEV out of China and their car is the Nio EP9. At first I thought it was a race car but as it turns out it's actually a production car.
The car is pretty insane. The car is built to FIA LMP1 specs on a carbon fiber monocoque frame, electric motor at each wheel and produces 1360 HP with 4671 lb-ft. of torque. The car weighs 3825 lbs. with the battery pack accounting for 1400 lbs. of the total weight.
0-62 mph in 2.7 sec
0-124 mph in 7.1
1/4 mile time of 10.1 sec
Top speed of 194 mph
2.53 G in cornering at 143 mph
It lapped the Circuit of the Americas faster than any other production car posting a lap time of 2:11 with a driver and reaching 174 mph and lapped it without a driver in 2:40 reaching 160 mph. It also lapped the Nürburgring last year in 7:05 beating the previous electric car record by 17 seconds (with driver).
Only six Nio EP9 will be built. There's currently no retail price for the car however it costs 1.2$ million to build. The company claims that the batteries can be fully charged in only 45 minutes or you can fully swap them out in 8 minutes. The car is suppose to have a range of 265 miles.
I not only find a car going that fast without a driver pretty interesting but also kind of creepy. There's just something wrong about a car driving itself. The technology could save a lot of live but I suppose it would only take one hacker to take a lot of lives as well. The insurance policies for those companies will be ridiculous.

Will probably be stuck going the speed limit at all times.
Other thing is if it drives itself will people under the legal age to drive be allowed to buy one? Obviously not this one since it'll more than likely be over 2$ million to purchase and only six being built but when the technology hits the market I'm sure there's going to be budget cars. Might no longer need a license once these hit the road. Get drunk and you won't even have to pay for a Taxi/Uber anymore.
If this proves to work without any accidents I guess people like bus drivers will lose their jobs.
Autonomous technology is a good and bad thing I suppose.
I don't want to get killed because my car starts buffering its safety instructions at some critical juncture. I don't trust any software with my life and I want to wield complete control over my own vehicle.
Want to talk about something pointless read the links below. Driverless race series. Anyone interested in watching that? Not me.

You're doomed lol.
Looks like the Chinese have come a long way but I still wouldn't buy a bicycle from China let alone something that drives itself. Well not until it's at least proven to be reliable and without any death over 5+ years.
Another cool thing about the car is that they didn't knock off the design like they do with everything else. That must be a first or close to it for the Chinese.

That being said, I can't see that taking off. I don't watch much car racing as it is, take out the drivers... eh
The technology is interesting and definitely has a purpose on the market but I don't think it belongs in any form of racing.
Only DNF's you would see in that series are if the cars get a flat or the technology fails. It certainly won't be because of a collision since the purpose of the technolgy is to avoid accidents. I'm not saying that I'm for big crashes but having a driver behind the wheel sure adds to the excitement of racing.
Like I previously mentioned a driverless race series with cars that make no sound doesn't appeal to me and I'm sure that I'm not the only one. Way too boring.
