What was your guys' dream jobs as kids? Any of you make it, or at least come close?

Looking at my avatar should be a clue as to what mine was. It's technically still within the realm of possibility, but I think Lloyd Christmas has a better shot of getting with Mary Swanson (Dumb and Dumber). Pro MX rider was next, unless I pull a 21st century John Dowd, that one's also out the window.

Now it's on to beer sales Cool

Mine was to be a Firefighter when I was a kid.

I did eventually become a paid/volunteer Fireman, attended the State Fire Academy in Ohio and was certified in rope rescue and operating Pumpers, Ladders etc., it was a great experience that I will always remember.

But, the reality for me was (this is back in the early to mid-80's) that it wasn't possible to make the amount of money that I wanted to unless you spent many years working on a good Department and moving up in rank. Lot of politics as well to navigate.

Fortunately, life offered me a different path and great professional and personal development opportunities that I have worked very hard for to this day.

I often wish I had stayed on track as a Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic as it was a very rewarding thing to do personally and I wonder where it may have taken me in life. The people I met and worked with were some of the best people I have known outside of the moto community.

No regrets though, but I do value those that serve our communities as Firemen in a different way than many.

P.S. JW, if you are selling, I am your buyer. We Irish guys are your meal ticket in beer sales.

Mine was an umpire for MLB. Ya, that didn't happen, haha. I also went down the pilot route for a little while but it wasn't near as cool as I thought it would be. It's weird, I went from flying a few times a week to build hours, and then when I quit I haven't missed it at all. I have really broad interests and have tried a whole lot of things, which has led me to be what I would consider to be well-rounded, but not really focused on a "dream career" anymore. Now I'm self employed and value that my schedule is flexible enough that I don't miss anything with my little boys.

When my parents first asked me I said I wanted to be a trash guy because they had sweet tattoos and got to hang on the back of the truck while it drove around. Luckily I didn't follow through with that one.

One day in 8th grade, my math teacher showed a simple proof of why a negative times a positive is a negative. Then we used that result to prove why a negative times a negative is a positive. It blew my mind. Nothing had ever made sense like that before. I could prove things were true. From that day forward, I wanted to be a math teacher.

12 years later... I'm a math teacher now

I always wanted to be a Seal or on a big SWAT team somewhere but my mom was way too overprotective to let that happen.

I never wanted to be anything but a pro rider, and did everything I could to stay out of the family business. Well I got to ride pro and then the choice of continuing down that road or going to college came and I chose school. I was some what successful my last season, but I crashed out of two seasons prior and school seemed like the logical choice.

Of course I ended up in the family business.

In my early 30s, for a hobby, I wanted to be an MMA fighter and I trained hard for it and then found out the hard way that I wasn't nearly as tough as I thought.

I always dreamed of being an Astronaut and a fighter pilot. Did not even come close but things have worked out well.

I've always heard that phrase "do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life." Maybe I just haven't found that one thing I love yet, but every career path I've gone down that's related to something I love has ended up being a bit of a letdown when you see what goes on behind the curtain. I don't know if anyone else has shared similar experiences, or maybe I'm just too analytical about things. Now, what I love about my career is that it allows me the freedom to do the things I love as a hobby instead of as a job, which I am grateful for.

I wanted to be a Pro Motocrosser,..Had a decent run at it heading into '83, until the end of the '83 season, where girls and partying ruined everything (Yes, all THEIR fault!),...Years later, Wanted to be a Race Tech, worked in the shops, became certified by all the Jap manufacterers, Polaris, SeaDoo, MMI, etc, and did a little parts analysis work for a major japanese brand, Finally getting not one, but two offers in 2006,...Unfortunately, I was right in the middle of a nasty divorce, and had to decline the positions or lose custody of my kids by moving!!! Now, at 46, I'm still not sure if I've grown up, but I can attest that my dream job is being the Amazing parent that my Awesome kids tell me I am every single day, and knowing that no matter how bad I may have screwed up in the past, that I'm doing OK now Smile

Ichthyologist, Marine Biologist. My science grades were never good enough to get into Scripps. Then I wanted to be a Fighter Pilot. Bad Eyes. I would never fly a plane for the Military. Going way back to when I was 8, I wanted to be Batman. Bruce Wayne, millionaire by day, crime fighter by night.

So I became myself.

My dream job was to ride snowmobiles for a living and out of college I got a job as a snowmobile test engineer... a couple highlights were being around Doug Henry when he was racing snocross and working on a project with the lead engineer who developed the yzf250 engine.

The bad- spending 160 nights a year in hotels and basically missing the first five years of my daughter growing up..

My current job is now my dream job because it pays well, I am home every night and it provides me plenty of time for family and motox!

I always wanted to be a fishing guide growing up. My dad was a captain on a big offshore sport fisherman and taught scuba too so I was around it 24/7 growing up. I always lived on the water and even lived on an island for most my life so it was a given that I would. Guided inshore and bass for 20 years now but pulled all my advertising years ago and just kept regulars and a little word of mouth. I like tournament fishing more and dealing with my rental properties more these days. When I was guiding 200 days a year, I literally stopped fishing myself ever because it was work. People will say that's crazy but imagine this, you take people to the track every day and let them ride and beat on your bikes all day while you watch and then you clean and fix everything and start again the next day. Don't get me wrong it is very rewarding taking people and watching them catch fish especially their first and my area is the easiest fishing there is but it can be tough on a person too but it is worth it.

I wanted to be a cop. I joined the Air Force with the intension of doing just that. During the physical I found out I was color blind. I always suspected it but it was confirmed. That eliminated a bunch of jobs, a cop being one of them. It turned out for the best because cops in the military can have it bad.

So I retire from the Air Force a couple o years ago and see the local police force is hiring. The job hunt wasn't going as well as I had hoped so I figured "what the hell" so I applied. Thought I was one of the better applicants because I was selected to take the initial test. There was over 300 people there who were also special. The test weeded out most, got it down to 60. I was one of them. Next was the physical fitness test. That eliminated about 15. I'm very physically fit so that was no problem for me. I was surprised at the younger people who failed. Next came the interview in order to be selected for the academy. That's where I blew it. Some questions were your typical interview type questions, but several required actual right answers from someone with police experience. So out of about 40 who interviewed, I scored in 16th. There were 8 openings. I figured some of those 8 selected would be eliminated during the clearance process but it never made it to me.

I ended up getting a nice desk job on the local AF base where I don't get shot at and every move isn't scrutinized hoping I screw up and it gets caught on camera.

So the dream of becoming a cop came an went. I train Jiu Jitsu with several local cops and a detective so I live my cop dream hearing their stories.

Check out this book... really good insight that dispels the whole do something you love thing, in favor of pick something and become really really good at it. http://www.amazon.com/Good-They-Cant-Ignore-You/dp/1455509124

My office, 1990-1994. It was a pretty cool gig, but definitely a young man's sport. Not sure I would have still dug it at 40 with a wife & kids...

Wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was a kid. I went about it the wrong way though. I joined the Air Force when I was 17, 2 days out of high school back in '81. My first job was Crew Chief on F-16s at Nellis AFB for a couple of years in Las Vegas. Then to Germany for 3 years, Crew Chief on F4E and G models. Then to Myrtle Beach for 6 years as Crew Chief on A-10s. The *correct* approach to becoming a fighter pilot would be to first get a degree and then try to become a fighter pilot in the Air Force. I figured I could first enlist, go to college while I was in, then go to OTS and try to get accepted for pilot training. Although that route IS possible it's 100 times more difficult than getting your degree ahead of time.

I did end up getting my degree over several years in Computer Science but then got out and made twice as much as fighter pilots made in the civilian world. I would still rather have been a fighter pilot. Smile I maintained just under a 4.0 grade point average when getting my Computer Science degree and I was strapping pilots into the cockpits who partied through college graduating with a 2.0 GPA. It just didn't seem fair. Smile I did get a ride in one of our F-4s in Spain though and got to take the stick for a while and do some aerobatics. Pretty awesome stuff. Great gig if you can get it.

I also joined the aero club and was working on my pilot's license at Myrtle Beach. Got 52 hours in before the first Gulf War and never finished it because I got orders as soon as I got back. I only needed another night flight at the time.

I was an east coast guy based at NAS Oceana. Had a blast, and worked with terrific people, but in '94 there was a massive RIF, and I was an AOCS grad flying a decommissioned aircraft, and my walking papers soon followed. But the post-Tailhook world sucked the fun out of it, and political correctness became the rule of the day, so I didn't mind the early exit.

Maybe this is just an excuse, but part of me really doesn't fret about likely not being a military pilot because of the "political correctness" thing you mentioned. Even though I was only born in '90, it's easy to see that today's armed forces operate much differently than in years passed. Countless variables/causes, and I would never try to say that it is for better or for worse because that is a complex discussion, but I can say that the AF now is not the AF I grew up wanting to fly in.

I have a friend that is very close to a MLB umpire. He is the guy that runs the head phones to the umps for video review. He also does camera work, instant replay and makes the strike box for tv. All for the Royals.

I also wanted to be a garbage man when I was a little kid. It was the smasher that did it for me.....That and the guy riding on the back of the truck had a pack of Marlboros rolled up in his shirt sleeve. He was coolLaughing

Or a backhoe operator.
