WTF? Are you equating Viet Nam to the civil war? What point are you trying to make here? Whatever it was you failed.

I don't think he is comparing the two as much as Mr. Newmann is saying that the Vietnam War was very unpopular in its day, and he can see the day when the Vietnam Memorial ends up getting scrapped by a bunch of revisionists. Wouldn't surprise me either. The 1984 quote above sums it up pretty well.

Aint that the truth. Add some bathroom access equality, college safe-spaces, gender-identity idiocrisy, rioting and violence labeled as "acceptable free speech", and you are starting to get a glimpse into the psyche of the 21st Century liberal.

Crazy world, it's going to take a lot to fix this mess and the ones that have been allowed to takeover. It won't be pretty either.

Is it really about taking down what certain people say are offensive monuments and landmarks or is it an effort to erase the history of a certain political party. Maybe both.
In CA they are removing all kinds street names, school names, etc. Seems like a bad presedent to me as its not difficult to start connecting dots to just about anything and make a case it's offensive.

It's plain ignorance. Just like when people say the civil war was about slavery. on a very simplistic level you can say that. But it was much more complex and political.

No, it wasn't. The war was over slavery, pure and simple. Any other attempt to explain it is simple revisionism......

I knew it. As soon as I saw that comment I knew this thread was now about why the North and South fought.

Instead, why don't you all look up the other threads on here where it's been hashed out to the nth degree.

You seemed to not be a fan of revisionism earlier in the thread.........

Perhaps you are okay with it on this subject?

Whatever. Keep on arguing. I'm sure an eventual winner will emerge.

Here's an inscription on one of the monuments removed in New Orleans.
---------------------------------
McEnery and Penn having been elected governor and lieutenant-governor by the white people, were duly installed by this overthrow of carpetbag government, ousting the usurpers, Governor Kellogg and Lieutenant-Governor Antoine.

United States troops took over the state government and reinstated the usurpers but the national election of November 1876 recognized white supremacy in the South and gave us our state

I thought the issue was about figures who committed treason against the USA being literally displayed on pedestals, rather than people being offended about history. I am not aware of any history being re-written, but then again I rarely check for new developments from the 1860's.

I can somewhat understand the flip side of the treason argument, even though I don't agree with it. But the very existence of the statues had more to do with intimidation and letting blacks know that just because they were "legally" free, they were far from accepted and held no real power over even their local governments. Monuments like these were erected as figurative middle fingers to the local black populations, and the inscription on the Liberty Place monument makes that very clear.

In some respects it'd be like erecting a statue of Joseph Goebbels next to a synagogue in Germany. There could definitely be folks that may argue that Goebbels was simply proud of his German heritage and was merely working to make Germany a better place, but obviously the folks attending that synagogue would likely have a different viewpoint. The black citizens of New Orleans probably feel similarly about the Liberty Place monument and the statues of the 3 men who risked their lives defending an institution that would consider them merely property......
