Black people and tattoos?

For years i have wanted a tattoo. My wife and I were thinking about getting matching tattoo's for our 10 year anniversary.

The problem is I have heard from a few of my friends that tattoo's dont look that great on black people. i am not super dark, but I dark enough that it would limit my options.
What are your thoughts on this?

I'm doing this for my wife, between her and I, not for the cool factor, but still.

Depends on your skin tone, I have one tatt that you can see perfectly but it's my wife;s name across my heart, so no one really sees it, because I'm not really that dark. Black people come in all shades so it's up to you to decide. Not everyone is Super Nova White either like Ol' Ger and Huck...
