Don't know how I missed this awesome thread before, but glad I found it.

There is a certain board member who I spent my formative years racing with who's dad was VERY high up at skunkworks. I've always loved aviation, and when I would bug him about what was going on in Burbank all he would say was, "let's just say if you think what you see now is cool, it may as well be a P-40 from WW2."

This was the early 90's.

Crazy to think about. He didn't say or hint at anything else?? Dammit this veil of secrecy pisses me off.

My father had really high military clearance at his last job as a foreman of a testing facility. He never told me what they were working on but they had portable walls they would put around the machines that were working on parts for it . The application was crazy in depth ,they wanted to know about his entire life basically . After he submitted it ,they go over it with you about any discrepancy the found ,one was that he spelled his 3rd grade teachers name wrong.

Something else I found from the old Burbank days, brought it back in from the garage.

It was on the Goodwill pile, decided no freaking way! Unsure

Yep I believe that, can you imagine what it would be like to get a clearance to Area 51. Woohoo

They fly them in each day in an unmarked plane out of Las Vegas McCarran Airport.

I had a lot of friends who flew into Area 51 on those unmarked planes back when the F117 was still under wraps. In fact the commander of that first F117 squadron went on to become the Wing Commander of the 354th TFW (A-10s) at Myrtle Beach AFB during the first Gulf War, where I was then stationed. That's where I got to know several of the F117 guys as they also went on to Myrtle Beach. I was actually stationed at Nellis with them but didn't know them at the time because they were flying up to the middle of the desert working on the F117s and I was back at Nellis working F-16s. We were all at Myrtle Beach when the F117 became public and several of my friends (that were stationed there together) were able to talk a little more about it and that they were all there working it together. I remember them being so happy they could finally talk a little about it.

I can only imagine how relieved those guys were.
Must have been cool to be stationed at Nellis.

My buddy back in the eighties that worked on the F-117, the only thing he could tell me was just imagine if Batman had a plane. Woohoo

Here's a story when North Korea tried to shoot down a Blackbird with a missile.

The "Janet" flights.

The neighbors would get random visits from people in suits asking what they know. Some crazy shit for sure.

I think people would be surprised what is flown out of Edwards at night. Sometimes hiding in plain sight is a good thing.

They're still talking about the fastest plane ever made.

The SR-71 was ahead of its time. Before, during, and after its time!

Lots of Chinese living in Palmdale/Lancaster for that reason.

Interesting stuff. I would imagine the sr72 would largely be flown by remote, no?

My understanding is it will be a drone only. Also, looks like they may have to have 2 (or more?) types of jets. Turbo jets have about a mach 2 ceiling, while ram jets have a mach 4 minimum. I also saw where they are developing mach 7 capable engines.

Well yes the SR-71 predecessor the A-12 was a kick-ass plane for sure but this new aircraft from the looks of it under tarp is not designed for Speed.

Could it be something like this? Cheerful
