I have to get a new PC. This one is 6 years old and starting to scare me. In the past I would wait until my computer died, making data xfer to the new one impossible. I just need a console and nothing turbo. I don't game. A lot of what I see out there comes with 8.1 and a free upgrade to 10. I have heard horror stories about the upgrade though.

Advice would be appreciated.

I'm in no hurry to upgrade. I have Windows 7 on my home computer and it works just fine. I hate, absolutely HATE Windows 8. I want to find the guy who approved the rollout and kick him square in the nuts. I'm worried 10 will still be too much like 8.

I have two computers upgraded to windows 10, no drama at all. Plus I like it better than windows 8, I would say it is closer to windows 7

Heard a lot of bad shit about 8. I think I will go with something that has 10 installed. There are better deals for comp's that have 8 and 8.1 that offer the free upgrade but fuck that. I don't have the patients.

Not really sure what's happening with my Win7 comp. It stalls out loading web pages. It eventually loads them but sumpin aint right. Could be hard drive or some effed up memory. My biggest problem is that it stalls while I'm recording live music. That's a total no go.

Then what year was that card designed? You do not have to buy a computer that has 10 from the first time you boot it.

They didn't give me a chance to argue with them about it. They shut the door. So, i am going to buy something that is pre loaded with 10. I am not going to buy a new computer with 8 and right out of the box have to download a new operating system.
NOTHING, get this, NOTHING ever works like they say it will. Not for me.

The Windows 8 hate was based on the start screen, primarily. It was a very good OS, people just couldn't come to terms with the start screen.

Windows 10 is very similar to 8, but there are performance improvements, universal apps, and better cloud integration. However, the cloud integration aspects (like Cortana and Edge) do sacrifice some privacy. You are opted in by default to these data collection settings. I personally don't see it as being any different than they way that android and ios have been for quite some time. People are just bummed because the settings are on by default and Microsoft wasn't exactly clear that they would be from the outset. Cortana functionality is awesome though, I left most of the settings on, except for targeted ads in Edge. The edge browser is the snappiest browser I've ever used. It performs extremely well. However, the downside is that it doesn't yet support extensions. This means no ad block.

Windows 10 uses less memory than windows 7, and there is improved paging. This means that it doesn't have to swap memory to disk nearly as often, which improves performance. I've installed it on a few generic HP machines at work that previously had windows 7. There is a noticeable performance boost.

I do recommend doing a clean install after you do the upgrade. This has solved issues for myself and other people I know. (The upgrade is how you get it for free. If you just do a clean install you will have to purchase.)

Tried Windows 10 to see what it was all about and realized why I don't like Windows. Hard to navigate, too many privacy concerns and I just don't agree with their philosophy. For me, Lubuntu on desktop, Arch Linux on one laptop and Gentoo Linux on another laptop. I do think Windows 7 is better than Windows 10 though.

well, one's a 500 gig and the other is like 300. Both laptops. i3 and i5 processors.

My main house computer still limps along on a 4+ year old XP installation. Sucks that everyone is abandoning XP but 10 is going to be good for the long haul.

I did just that today and so far so good. Nothing to complain and for example, Firefox seems to work way faster in W10.

Never ever upgrade.
Get with the latest and dont fuck with it.

Or you risk anything on it if you upgrade.
And be ready for it to be junk if you do upgrade.

Upgraded from 7 to 10. went back to 7. I assumed that a particular software program would work on 10..I should have checked first.
I did read somewhere that 10 tracks activity....like they need more

8 sucks

Oh and also risk all your loaded programs won't work and need to be reinstalled.

Its just not worth the headaches. And even possible nightmares.

Same with phones. Each time they push an OTA upgrade....I save everything to the PC and PRAY the update doesn't brick the phone.

Dont fix what isnt broken.

I finally broke down and upgraded last evening because I got tired of the notification pop ups. Uggg, I wish I wouldn't have. I lost my left and right click buttons on my HP laptop. It also put email pop ups on the right hand side of the touch screen from my junk email account. Now I'm sure I have to spend hours learning how to get these back and the email notices to disapear. Yay!
No, it would not bring my buttons back in settings. I sends an error and the program shuts down. I don't know what to do. I found one place to type in a help question and it was junk. jibberish

go into your device manager and update the touchpad driver (right click, select update driver software, search automatically).

if it doesn't update go to HP's website and find the Win10 driver for your model laptop.

Here's a link to disable email notifications in Win10
