Ever since I went Scuba Diving (my first and last time) about nine yrs ago my ears have never been the same. Did it in Cancun and it’s a quick 1 hr course and then next thing you know they take you to the ocean. I had trouble equalizing (getting to deeper depths) as I’ve never been good at popping my ears.

Anyway later on I noticed my ears seemed plugged and I have a weird popping sound if I move my jaw.

I even went to an ear specialist and I checked out ok and he prescribed some steroids that I never took. Seemed like a weird cure so I didn’t take them, guess I should have.

The last few yrs I’ve noticed a ringing sound (like the sound when you are under water) and lately it has gotten much LOUDER.

I’M sure being around LOUD m/c’s and music hasn’t helped much either.

There doesn’t seem to be much you can do for it.

Just wondering if anyone has had this?

Flying Thursday and staying at altitude for five days now concerns me.

Thanks

I do.
I have what is considered a "Moderate" case.
It is more pronounced on my left side as I have about 30% hearing loss in that ear.
I guess standing next to a stack of Marshalls and crashing drum set for about 15-20 years was a bad idea........ear plugs would have probably been a good idea in retrospect.

Don't know much about the flying thing as I haven't had any problems from that, I just use my jaw and inner ear to pop them regularly as the plane acends and decends.

It's a constant whining ring in my ears which I notice more when I am in a really quiet room or when I am trying to go to sleep.
I usually just leave some music or the TV playing all night so I can drown out the ring.
There are times when it is worse and it's fucking maddening to not be able to get away from it.

That old Bob Seger line comes to mind;
"Later in the evening As you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers Ringin' in your head"

It's been almost 12 years since I played out live and I am still hearing that echo....

Same here. I'm still hearing that 100 watt Marshall after 40 years. G-man, the steroids are typically given to new tinnitus patients to test for infection or inflammation. I guess your ENT didn't explain that very well. If you take the roids and the ringing improves it means you have a treatable condition. If it does not improve then you're fucked like me and jndmx. In rare cases it's caused by small tumor which can be removed but it requires an MRI to detect it. There are some web sites that give you some suggestions on masking but for the most part you're stuck with it.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Well it's probably been about 1.5 yrs since I saw the doc, I think I still have the pills.

Last night I could barely sleep, I think I have a head cold developing that is making it worse.

Should I try taking the roids or is too late?

thx

Probably not too late but you should probably check with your ENT. If I remember, it was only about a week or 10 day supply. It had no effect on mine except my dick disappeared. JK.

Check here to find out about some relief.

Man this subject really hits home. I've been laid off for over a year now and that's the longest I've been away from screaming jet engines in 30+ years. I never really noticed the ringing (tinnitus) til the last few months. It's really driving me crazy. I'm getting tired of saying "what?" all the time. I gave that website a quick once over and never imagined that diet could have an impact...always thought it was just noise.

Try the faucet test. Run a sink faucet and notice if the ring goes away. It does for me. It's a brain trick. They think the ringing is in your head and not your ears. A running faucet puts out a great number of high frequencies. one is likely to match the ringing in your "head". The theory is that your brain will concentrate on what seems to be the logical source, the faucet. It's called masking. They make audio disks with noises that fool your brain. I've never tried them because I just turn MSNBC on. It works just as well.

Scuba is not what gave you tinnitus. That just affects your fluid levels and pressure withon your inner ear. It's from being around loud noises without hearing protection. The tiny hairs inside your ears, called cilla, lay down and stand up and do all sorts of cool things inside your ears to allow you to hear. After awhile and exposure to loud noises these hairs no longer stand up. This is when you get loss of hearing and your sound nerves inside get inflammed ( hence the steroid perscription that you neglected to take to reduce this inflammation) and give the constant sound of ringin in your head. Yes I have it also. 12 years of sitting under a squalling transmission for hours at a time, even with a helmet on, has given me this too. Sometimes you want to rip your own inner ears out. Most of the time it's ignorable but sometimes it's enough to drive you nuts.

I have it, probably from being around racing cars for the past 20 + years.

It is annoying, sometimes worse than other times, but you just have to learn to live with it.

I have tried all the herbal things and vitamins and magic potions. Nothing works.

I have read a lot about it, including reading about people that have committed suicide because they couldn't get away from it.

I read that a guy had his eardrums punctured so that he could get away from it, but he ended up deaf and still had the ringing. It is in your head more than in your ears!

lol.....I was wondering how long it would be for someone to post that.

It does suck having it and there are times when I just want to scream because I just can't ever get away from it but ya gotta keep a sense of humor as much as you can.

I feel bad for you guys that got it as a result of your work, at least I got to drink and pick up loose women while I was ruining my hearing.

Thanks for the detailed explaination.

All I know is after my scuba diving trip when I was on the ocean floor after taking the course snorkeling around in the resort swimming pool my ears have never been the same.

It seems like a good deal to be scuba certified in a freaken hour! LOL

Turns out it wasn't such a good idea...

Although it was pretty cool in Cozmel Cancun.

Today isn't as bad, I guess it comes and goes.

Up until 2 months ago I never had a problem with tinnitus. First out of nowhere I wake up with it in my left ear. High pitched tone/ringing. 3 days ago I wake up with it in my right ear. Went to the Doc, he gave me some prescription strength nasonex and an antibiotic for an infection in my right ear. Man I hope this goes away. I know what you mean about trying to get sleep.

Void have you seen the new Truimph 800xc? It has absolutly nothing to do with tinnitus but damn, what a nice looking/sounding scoot.

I was just at the Triumph/Ducati dealer this weekend and saw some really cool stuff. I was drooling all over this Ducati until I saw the $44,000 price tag. Smile

I have it slightly, and for someone so young it worries me a bit. I think it might be from being in a loud environment at work, but who knows. Usually just gets bad when I am in a very quiet room.

Your a welder/pipefitter arnt you? My hearing is ok but Ive been around grinders and welding enough to know its tough on the ears.

Do yourself a favor and just commit to having on you/wearing ear protection ALL the time. Even if it means making others around you wait while you put some plugs in/ear muffs, whatever. Soon, others will follow your lead and the shop will be a better environment to work in..

Yeah, I wear my earplugs pretty religiously but I think even the constant noise of light stands and welding machine engines and machinery in the mill wears on your hearing. As soon as I started getting it I started being more adamant about carrying earplugs with me. I even had some custom ones till someone nicked them from my coveralls Sad

35 years in aviation. Ya think? Sometimes I say out loud to my family, "Someone answer that damn phone!"

The usual reply is, "It's not ringing."

I will be sitting on the couch and go deaf in one ear then it will start ringing then hearing will come back 5 seconds later. My ears are always jacked up. Had them checked a million times and it's always normal. I think I have a lot of congestion and my TMJ adds issues also.

I don't see how anybody can tolerate that. I never did concerts growing up. I went to one concert once and the speakers were so loud it was unbearable. I just can't tolerate that.

I have what I would call a moderate case of it . It's worst when everything is quiet of course but it's there all the time . Years of working in machine shops without ear protection. I've been wearing ear plugs for awhile now hoping it will prevent it from getting worse.

I've had it for years. Sometimes it is so loud that it freaks me out because there is no stopping it,just turn up the tv and drown it out.

I remember the 1st time I noticed it,and wasn't sure if it had been before and i just didn't notice, but since then when it is quite there it is. Never stops.

I've read it can be from blood rushing thru narrowed arteries and early sign of a possible stroke area or such.

I've noticed my hearing getting worse and worse over the past few years. But every time I think it's getting really bad, I hear like friggin mouse's footsteps from across the room. Sometimes I can't even hear the person talking two feet away though... Not sure what's wrong, maybe a really bad case of "selective hearing" lol

If I don't think about it, the ringing goes away...

As far as flying on an airplane goes, I just chew gum

My best friend has it in one ear all the time ,RPG hit 15 feet above his head ,he has pieces of the building still in his back as well. He said it was excactly like saving private Ryan beach scene, slow motion and couldn't hear anything ,his Lt. tackled him just as he got his bearing .

Thanks billy...now I'm gonna be parinoid about having a stroke. I better have another red beer to calm my nerves and wash down these pig ribs and sausage.
