I'm looking for a drumset for my 6- Y.O. son for Christmas. I'm a classically-trained musician and rock guitarist, but I know almost nothing about drums. I'm hoping to find something cheap but reliable, probably looking for new only. I want to bridge that gap between "toy drums" and a real instrument. Any ideas for brands/models I should be looking at?

Ideally, the drums would be in the right size that I could upgrade to better drum heads later.
If the kid sticks with it, I'll get him something nicer in a few years.

Is an entry level electric set a consideration for you? Alesis makes some nice little bang-for-the-buck sets. Plus the name is almost Alessi. Bonus.

I've been looking at this one for my daughter: http://www.amazon.com/Junior-Complete-Childrens-Cymbal-Sticks/dp/B009Z9…

What I was looking for was wood shells, in sizes that would take normal replacement drumheads. But I don't know the tom sizes. This kit has a little bass drum pedal but no hi-hat. Reviews are good.
I think what you don't want is the super cheap plastic jobs with heads that would be quickly destroyed.

Yeah, 12" bass drum is pretty small. And Hman, my kid specifically stated he didn't want electronic drums.

I'm going to look into the PDPs and see what else I can find at Guitar Center, Musician's Friend, etc.

Anybody else have suggestions?

Honestly I'd try to talk him into the electronic set. Super quiet, plus he can dabble with recording without having to buy a bunch of microphones down the road. And they come with about a thousand different pre-set kits for him to mess around with instead of just one kit that he'll grow out of fairly quickly (including some hilarious sound effect kits). My parents got one for my sister a few years ago and she absolutely loves it. They also love it because it sounds like she's daintily tapping together a quaint little birdhouse when she plays instead of the migraine-inducing "Hot for Teacher" ruckus all day long.

Plus resale on a electric kit is waaay better than a traditional kit. Just in case...

In case it helps, my buddy just picked this up for his kid and said it's actually pretty decent:

Break beats by Ludwig is a pretty cheap small option for you. I was going to get one for small gigs but the band kind of fizzled out.

If you can afford it I would go electronic though. That volume knob will save your ears

Yup

If you do your homework and learn the differences between the various kits, you can buy something thats very capable. PDP is a really solid brand and all the head sizes are common. The Made in Mexico shells are the ones you want/not the Asian shells.
