I have only been to 1024 using the Mancini method.
Mancini method: Start by only swiping left and right at the beginning. Then make chains going up, then more left right. Don't swipe down, you'll screw it up.

Trick is to leave high value tile in low corner.
You can keep them along any side, it doesn't have to be the bottom.
I couldn't keep the chain in order after I made the 1024 piece
