I own a 13' Ford F-150 4x2 with 3.5 Ecoboost engine. The truck makes a grinding/howling noise under acceleration while shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. It also makes the noise after driving and putting it in park. But the noise goes away when I put it in drive. The sound makes a noise similar to a power steering moan/groan. But I know it's not a steering issue.

I've taken the truck to two certified Ford service departments and neither can diagnose the problem. But they can duplicate and hear the noise.

I've had nothing but problems with this truck since I bought it December 2013.

Any mechanics out there who may be able to give me an idea what is causing the noise?

I'm thinking a transmission issue of some kind. Maybe a tranny check valve.

Ford is clueless and no help at all. About ready to just sell the truck and walk away from it! Unless I can claim Lemon Law.

What is the limitation on the lemon law?

Can you tell where the sound is coming from. Front or back?

Aren't those turbo charged? you think the turbo is suspect?

there is some clutches in the front of the 4wd tranny that make noise ,not sure if the 2wd is set up same way.

has the truck ever been towed?

i will ask my buddy,30 yr ford tech ,if he has seen similar.

The noise seems to be coming from the front center area of the engine/tranny.

Hillbilly, yes my truck was towed for about 30 miles when the truck had 400 miles on the ODO! Truck engine failed due to what Ford said was a faulty wiring harness to the EFI. Truck has basically never run right since!!

Yes, I agree the EcoBoost is a piece of shit! The engine/turbo has a intermittent LOOOONG delay during acceleration. Press down on the gas pedal and some times the truck doesn't accelerate. Have to let off the gas pedal and try again and then it takes off after a 2-4 second delay. Almost been rear ended on the freeway as it's hesitated many times.

I also currently have a annoying air noise leak from the front passenger door. 1st time Ford didn't fix it, they said no problem found! Drove it away and the noise was still present, turned around and gave it back to them! 2nd time they replaced the main door seal. Got it back and doing over 70mph the noise is still present! Going back again for a 3rd attempt for Ford to fix it!

California Lemon Law states 4 consecutive problems of the same identical problem and non resolution.
I've already tried pursuing that Ford buy back my truck. As it's been in the shop multiple times. But Ford is the worst to work with, they just deflect everything. Having a helluva time!

How was it towed? Also, most mechanics these days plug in their computer and if it doesn't show any codes they're clueless about what to do. See if you can find an older mechanic, they suck at computers but most of the time they can troubleshoot a problem without needing one.

It was first towed by the rear end lifted with the front wheels under load for about 7 miles. Then after that by a flat bed truck.

The Ford certified mechanics I have and am currently dealing with are total morons! Their Service Director is even worse!

This morning I took a video with my phone of the truck making the noise. Showed the video to the Service Director and Tech and they just looked at me and said, "Yep, that's the noise we heard." Then the Director asked me if I had any idea what is causing the noise!

My brother in law has that same truck, and has what sounds to me like the same problem. He's an ASE certified mechanic and he has traced his problem to a misfire on two cylinders. He also thought it was a transmission issue at first.

Well it wasn't towed improperly. Some idiots just throw them in neutral and tow them from the front. Big no-no.

wow, you got a lemon. i've not heard of your issue, but the lack of accel and turbo spooling way late is new to me. mine is very very responsive.

i've had two issues with mine. one the drive was slipping when moving from a stop to 5mph. Ford took care of it. the other was one of my spark plug's ceramic cracked while towing, another known issue with the Ecoboost of which Ford took care of.

other than that I've had my 12 since summer of '12 and the truck has been perfect. bummer you hate your's.

Peely, sometimes the acceleration response is immediate almost too immediate, other times it takes 3-5 seconds. And sometimes it doesn't accel at all.

The last two F-150s I owned, '04 & '07, had catastrophic transmission failures with no warning at around 75K miles.

At least yours is warning you.

My truck only has 10k miles on it, under warranty so it's Ford's responsibility. My only hope is I have a claim for lemon law or enough problems with it that Ford takes my truck back!

that's really a bummer man. i'm actually headed out on a boating trip tomorrow towing my 24' cuddy boat. there are two very large climbs that just killed my F-150 V8 a few years ago and my Eco will hit the speed governor up them if i let her run. just too bad you got a piece of shit

Show your dealer this TSB 14-0134 , other people have had a similar issue and a TSB was issued to fix the separator plate in the trans.

Picked up my 2013 f150 December 2013. 15000 miles on it now. Works great, no problems. Turbo spooling,is just kicking in like the diesels. Great truck, handles like a car. Can pull 10000lbs no problem. Silly

Ford dealer said my trucks symptoms don't match the TSB 14-0134. Which I told them they're incompetent! I read multiple consumer reports on Ford 150 internet forum that owners have the same symptoms of mine and the TSB resolved the groan. The root cause is a faulty tranny separator plate. But My Ford dealer says since they cannot find where the noise is coming from, that Ford Corporate will not authorize them to fix it with the TSB. Total bullshit in my opinion. Contacted a nationwide leading Law Firm who specializes in auto lemon laws. They said they predict a 98% chance that my case will win. I will talk to them more on Monday. I'm done with this truck and Ford, I will never own another one after this experience.

I bought a Tundra after my last Ford grenaded.

240,000 miles with zero issues.

Not zero, actually, I had to replace the alternator recently.

Piece of shit alternator only lasted a couple hundred thousand miles.

Sounds like you are describing a "Sprag" one way clutch noise.

After I hopefully get away from this POS Ford, my plan is to buy a used 04-06' Tundra with as low miles as I can. Seen a few nice ones on Autotrader.

Sucks that your dealer is no help, I'm sure the district rep and Ford would feel different about this issue.

I certainly don't blame you for moving on.
