DARE COUNTY, NC (WITN) - The Coast Guard says two Navy jets crashed off the Oregon Inlet this morning after they collided.
The F/A-18 Super Hornets were stationed in at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach.
The Coast Guard says a commercial fishing boat, the Jamie, recovered the four crew members who were in the water.
A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter from Elizabeth City hoisted the survivors and flew them to a hospital in Norfolk. At the hospital, two crew members were taken from the helicopter in stretchers. Both were alert.
A second Coast Guard helicopter landed with the other two crew members who walked into the hospital.
The crash was first reported around 10:30 a.m. and occurred some 25 miles off the coast.
Navy spokesman Ensign Mark Rockwellpate says the two jets were on a routine training mission when they collided.
Rockwellpate didn't have information about the extent of the crew members injuries.
He says a safety investigation will be carried out to determine what happened.
