Leaning it on the fence wouldn't be the problem. That lever on the bar might be a hot start for use when the bike is hot not cold. Typically the choke is located on carburetor. You should pull that out when starting cold. Have you tried that?

If that lever is a compression release here's a video to help you figure out the cycle:

Is there a fuel on/off from the fuel tank?

Is there gas in the tank?

What sort of effort are you putting into the kickstart? With a big single you need to give it everything no half arsed kicks. Put some boots on too

If you can afford it, I'd take it to a shop or kawi dealership and have them look it over to make sure everything is ok on it. I had an 06, 07, 08, 10, and 12 kx450 and never had an issue like that at all with any of them. Unfortunately this happens quite often with used 4 strokes. Sometimes it's a small easy fix or sometimes it's a big expensive fix. Hopefully for you it's something small and easy, but have a professional look over everything and diagnose it for you.

Sorry for late response. Been at work. I have tried with and with out choke. There is gas and it is on. I am giving everything I got when I kick it and it won't budge. Every so often it will finally go down. But won't start. Then when I bring back to the top again it gets stuck again. I'm 240 pounds so I figure I have plenty of weight to kick it over. A local shop said it is probably flooded. But we took the spark plug out as he said and tried to flush it by kicking it over and no gas cane out. Put it back together and still the same problem

Also it started just fine with in a few kicks when I went to pick it up. It kicked over every time. Carilinojoe, that seems to be what I have. Compression release lever. I tried it how the vid showed and still won't budge

I wonder if your compression release is broken?

Does the previous owner live far away? Maybe he can help you out?

Possible to load a video showing your problem?

Type this into the search on thumper talk...

- kx450f kicks really hard andthen stops -

There's a thread on what might be your issue. Since you've admitted your a newbie on the bike I hope your skills with a wrench are decent. If so you should be able to navigate through the process.

Good luck.
... and I wouldn't go to the local shops for anything if that's the advice they offer.

Lastly ... the lever on your bike is a hot start lever, NOT A COMPRESSION RELEASE. The compression release is internally operated on the cam automatically.

Looking into that now. But for future references, I guess I only use the hot start when I've been riding the bike and its still hot when I try to crank it?

Yes, four strokes don't like to start with hot air in the intake the lever opens a spot in the carb allowing cooler air in. Once the engine fires up immediately release the lever.

I am going to venture a guess that the auto decompression arms are stuck open on the cam or the spring has broken. This works on rpm to allow easy starting and them they move out of the way at idle speed so full compression is reached. If hung open or the spring has broken or come off then you have full compression you are kicking against and it's almost impossible to kick it over that way.

I just got a 250 a couple weeks ago and I was coming off a 2 stroke . So as I went to buy my bike the guy kicked it ounce and it started right up then as I brought it home I want to read it agai it started right up then as I brought it home I went to ride it agin and I could not get it started I kicked it and kicked it over and over again . And the problem was me befor you kick it push the kickstarted down all the way very slowly then bring it up slowly to half way then nail it with one hard kick do this a couple times soon you will get the hang of it
