I can't imagine there are many good shape 426 motors left around. Also most people I know that get a 450 to ride on single track trails find them to be a handful. Even if you are going to have to hit the road some, I would go 250F.

So a newer WR250 engine would probably be my best bet?

Yes, that would be an option. I had an o4 WR250f and then an 06 yz250f . I never had any problem motor or gearing wise on the 06 250f just riding it pretty much stock in the woods and single track. I liked the yz250f so much more, because it is a much more serious bike. Just get a KTM like I finally did.

KTM350exc is my dream bike but its a bit out of my price range. Hows he gearing difference feel in the yz and wr? I know my YFZ450 is extremely fast but low geared. It'll cruise around 35 at 3000 rpm

Couple of years ago, I put a 2008 YZ450 motor in a 2007 YZ250F chassis. Had to oval out the head stay, but otherwise it fit. The 250F chassis is about a half inch shorter than the 450 frame, so it turns better. Downside of it was that it was slightly less stable in really fast rough straights.
The stock 08' 450 motor was pretty mellow for a 450.
