If your not interested in the electric start and the older years. I'd get a Yamaha. I had 2 2012 KTM 250s and now the 2016.

But if I went back in time, I think the older Yamahas were better

my price range is maybe somewhere around 3,000. If i can find a leftover somewhere in that range that would be great. But i wouldn't know where to look for something like that new.

I believe that from 2010-11 thru to 2013 the Kawasaki KX250F won allot of comparison shootouts done by reputable people / magazines etc etc

If it's your first bike you will be a lot happier with the Yamaha. Avoid the 2006 as it was the first year of the aluminum frame and it didn't like to turn. Find the cleanest low hour model you can no matter what the year. I had a 2003, 2004,2007 and 2009 all good bikes. My favorite was the 2004. As far as horsepower goes the ktm makes more but you wouldn't think so riding them back to back. Yamahas run real good right off the bottom end while the ktm does not get going till your revving it out pretty good. Plus you can find a ton of good cheep parts for the Yamaha. Ktm not so much.

This post is a bit old and i have done a lot of research since. What i have now have in mind is a 2013 kx250f or a yamaha 250f. I am leaning towards the yamaha because i just love the color of it and how nimble it looks. I am currently looking for a 2014 yami since that was the year efi was implemented. But the only downside is that most people who are selling 2014's in texas want way to much for them for being used. Typically around 5,000-7,000. I might have to find a dealer that i can finance with. My budget was around 3,000 but i cant find anything that i want for that price. So i guess payments may be the best way to go through a dealer.

Right on! Pick a color. All the newer ones are good.
