What the reasoning behind putting a cage in it.

That is called the 'air box'.
Pretty sure a 99' RM125 will have to be done like this:
1)Remove the seat.
2)Remove the sidepanels
3)Remove the rear fender.
3)Remove the silencer (muffler)
4)Loosen the carburetor to airbox joint.
5)Remove the lower subframe bolts (2)
6)Remove the upper subframe bolt (and nut if there is one)
7)Remove the subframe assembly from the bike
8)Remove the screws that fasten the airbox to the subframe
9)Remove the Airbox
Reverse procedure to install the new one.
What is wrong with the airbox that is on it?
