1989 Yamaha YZ 490 2 stroke upgrades?

Just picked up a Yz 490. It was sitting in my friends barn for quite some time. Tags were for 1999. Put some new fuel in it and she started up but I'm doing a rebuild on the bike. I build cars so this is a first for me. Block says it was ported. How should I go about upgrading the bike during the rebuild? Anything I should know?

Uh honestly i would try this in the old moto sections maybe post up some pictures of what you have. There are lots of guys around here that can give you much more information than i can. From my memory though, I think there is a relatively simple head mod, may have been done to your bike to lesson pinging, jim holley article floating around that explains his mods to i think it was his 1988. but essentially the same bike. suspension forks weren't that bad for the time maybe one of the better set ups. , but do a search here first on the search bar, look at bike checks, some of these guys have really cool old bikes...good luck
