Are you interested in a VitalMX Concept2 rowing competition? (UPDATED 7/8/10)

After seeing a couple topics pop-up here and there about them, and being a user myself, I thought it might be fun little deal… and maybe a little extra motivation to push harder when training.

--------

What you will need

Access to a C2 rower, a camera, Internet access, lots of water, and possibly a puke bucket.

Classes

Three ways to battle it out (2 age groups):
- 500 Meter
- 2000 Meter
- 5000 Meter
- +40 500 Meter
- +40 2000 Meter
- +40 5000 Meter

Timeline

This competition will last 8 weeks. This gives you time to get your fitness up to snuff, work on your times, post times, talk crap and see where everyone else is at. This will officially kickoff July 5th (the perfect time to start burning off those Fourth of July grilled mayonnaise balls), with your best Week 8 (Aug. 23-29) times due in by Monday August 30 at Midnight.

Each week is dedicated to 2 of 3 challenges. You must log at least one time for each of those particular distances during that week to show where you are at. Of course, you can still post whatever you want on VitalMX, too.

Week 1: 500, 2k
Week 2: 5k, 2k
Week 3: 5k, 500
Week 4: 500, 2k
Week 5: 5k, 2k
Week 6: 5k, 500
Week 7: 500, 2k
Week 8: FINALS - ALL (It is also mandatory that during the finals you paste photos of your monitor details here on VitalMX, as well)

Rules

You may only use final 500, 2k, and 5k times generated during the 8th week. I will post a secret word the final week, and it must be taped to you monitor when you take a picture, unless your monitor is on detailed view and shows the date. This ensures everyone puts in an effort through the whole competition and doesn’t quit, for example, after Week 4, and then posts their best times from that week on the final week.

Create a C2 Logbook and become a training partner

1) Jump onto the Concept2 logbook and make a profile. Its really quick.
2) Go to your Profile. In the descriptions you will find your Ranking ID #. Post it here.
3) After you have someones Ranking ID # go to the bottom of your Profile and you can then enter that persons number is as a Training Partner (or accept requests). If we all do this, we will be able to see everyones logs as they go along.

Prizes

1) Greg at Concept2 will hook-up the winners with some C2 swag.
2) Robb Beams of MotoEndurance.net is giving everyone a free training guide for anyone in the challenge. Go to this link http://www.concept2.com/...r_sports/default.asp and click on the box where it says MotoE rider resources. That will take you to Robb’s site and in the comments write VitalMX. He is also going to give out a free 3 month racing batch program to anyone who finishes the challenge

There could be more to come, as well.
Some other things you can expect though are:
- Glory of being able to say you’re not just a fat lazy guy that likes to talk about moto on VitalMX
- Ability to ride longer and faster motos when you hit the track
- A trimmer, happier, you
- Lots of chicks!!! (or guys…or both)

So what do you say? Who’s in?!

Is there going to be a set resistance level?

I would say no.... the lighter the resistance the more times your going to have to pull, the higher the resistance the harder your going to have to pull. Either way your ass will be tired.

Mines usually set at 5 1/2

Okay. I like it. My best 5000 meter is a 19:18, probably going to have to step it up. Ha.

For those curious about what resistance they want to use, here is some info about that on the Concept2 site: http://concept2.com/us/training/basics/damper_intensity.asp

The damper setting can be different from machine to machine based on how dirty the damper is etc, most of the folks that are serious about rowing set the drag factor in the menu from what I've seen.

The reason I thought it would be good to have this last 8 weeks is for a few reasons:

1) Many here aren't pro racer and probably aren't in the best shape they could be in, so there is room to improve.

2) It gives those who are new to the rower to a chance to adapt and learn how to use it to correctly and to their full potential.

3) You will get to see where others are at through the weeks, so, when maybe you thought you were doing good, you will realize you can push a little harder.

.... and I don't know about you, but I'd have a little trouble getting my best possible 500, 2000, and 5000 meter times all at once on the same day.

Just got mine a few weeks ago and my times are not impressive in the least. Pulled my first 30 minutes this weekend and got around 6300 meters. I think my hips got dislocated as well. 8 weeks may not be long enough for me to peak. LOL

You'd be surprised at how quickly you progress. I started not far off of where you are now and within about a month was topping 7000m in 30mins. Stick to it and you will see a significant change. I'm pulling at a 7300m 30min pace regularly now. My goal is 7500m in 30mins. The machine is awesome.

Keeping a 500m split time of 2:00 or less is a real challenge for 30mins.

Bummer about the clavicle... But nothing say's you can't jump in a few weeks into this.

Like posted above, what really matters is the times posted during that final week to see where everyone stacks up.

Everything from July 5th until then is really just to post your progression here and there to help push each other and what not

That would be me! The old decrepid piss moan and bellyache class. Just pulled my second 30 minute moto and got over 6800 meters. The puke bucket could be a real necessity. Had to get a beer and some pizza afterwards.

Hey newmann, we can just try to beat each other's time and not worry about all those young whippersnappers if they throw us all in one pot. Trying to beat all these guys seems about as pointless as lining up against Doug Dubach and Trampas Parker in the +45 class at LL's. I'm 49 but I don't feel a day over 56!

Great idea! There should definitely be two classes - Young Punks & Old Farts.... (I've clearly pointed out of the first class!)

A little friendly competition is just what I need to get me back on the rower and working harder at rehab! Are any of you guys using the C2 Online logbook to track your meters/times? Maybe add an Honorable Mention award for the VitalMXer who rows the most meters overall during the contest period?

Greg - chime in here! How about some C2 swag for the prize package?

I will snoop around a bit on the Concept site to see.. If not, there has to be other indoor rowning sites (I hope..) that might have this..

Good news.. it is possible to set of groups (Affiliation) on the Concept website!

When you register.. at the bottom you will see a section for Affiliation. When I registered I indicated 'VitalMX' (I think you can change this if necessary)

And then you can view rankings by Affiliation.

Can someone else try signing up to see if this is how it works?

I love it ! I will defiantly supply the winners with some C2 T-Shirts. They will be the ones I am having made up for Loretta Lynn's. I will also find some other stuff as well. I like the Idea of taking a picture and posting it. Is it best time for 5000 meters? Lets talk it up. If any of you are on other forums try invite others to get off their butts. Maybe we can get the DMXS guys to compete. I will also see if RacerX Virtual Training will write about it.
