As far as the "C class" comments... I was at a bunch of races back then, and was lucky enough to be at some of the Team Honda practice sessions (it wasn't as "public'" as it is now) and to see those guys ride was no "C class" experience.

They screamed those 250's around a track. The only limits to putting in faster laps were the suspension, and the fact that the tracks were not "engineered" so that every jump face set you up for a perfect landing, and every rhythm section was perfectly timed and balanced so that you could do it with your eyes closed.

I wish I could go back in time and watch practice at Daytona around 1985. The roughest, most flow-proof tracks ever, and these guys were PEGGED all the way around.

I agree, Tbteam. what some of you don't seem to get is that motocross didn't just start with MC, RC and Bubba! Smile It's called PROGRESSION, and every era has gone through it! Bikes and riders get better as technology develops the bikes. Let me give you guys and example: I'm good friends with Gary Semics (for those of you who don't know, he was the 1974 500 SX Champ, and factory rider for over a decade). Anyway, we still ride together on occasion, and let me tell you, he still hauls the mail! I've seen vids and pics of him in his heyday, and he was doing crossups and looking like a "C" rider, as some of you put it. Well, a few weeks ago we were at a friends SX track (and I mean SX!), and he was coming out of a corner to a ten foot high 60 foot blind double with no run, seat bouncing it and kissing the backside lap after lap, as well as killing the rest of the track! Couple fast guys there had trouble keeping up with him, so back off the "old" dudes. My point is, he has adapted to the "newer" version of the sport over the years, and he's been racing since the late 60's! Some of you would benefit greatly from watching "World's Greatest Supercross Races" collection on dvd. google it, buy it, and learn a little about the sport you love!

It's unbelievable the way Gary rides. He's in his 50s and just looks like a teenage A Classer out there. I think Gary's "Evolution of Motocross" should be required viewing.

As for Holly and those guys- it's apples and oranges to compare to the bikes and track of today. Those guys were ironmen.

On a podcast I did with Weege, we were kinda making fun of the older guys and I guess Wardy was listening (he did say that he listened to them.)

So on his podcast, Ward kind of explained the differences between the older dudes and nowadays. As usual, his explanation made a lot of sense. Take a listen!

Motocross is still evolving. You have to realize that in 1988, most people didn't even know what a 'scrub' was, so they just flew over a jump the fastest way they knew how - straight - which is what you see a lot of in that video (which makes them look like C riders). I'm pretty sure they were going through turns almost as fast as today's pro's.
In 20 years, somebody will come up with something else to make Stewart look like a novice.

just look at that track... all the whoops were different heights and spaced different, the forks were 43mm standards and FLEXED like bamboo in the wind.... it took true skill to ride that with any sort of flow, wardy, RJ and the rest were simply amazing and I think they could still go just as fast on these "excite bike" enspired tracks with sculped sections that lend themselves to modern riding techniques.

Old guys aren't that slow today.

Take when MC "came back" . He wasn't really off the pace at all considering he doesn't really need to hang it out to prove a damn thing.
