11/5/2009 5:42 PM When they put you under they do it. You never know, it's out by the time you wake up. Don't sweat it and you won't feel it later. I've had 2 ACL's done.

11/5/2009 5:56 PM Sure enough my friend.
The good news is that they put it in while you are asleep and take it out before you are coherent. Now if they take it out too early and you can't piss to save your life, then they will have to throw it back in there (speaking from experience) It was definitely very awkward when the nurse (male, in my case...might have been for the better though if you know what I mean) shoves er in. And it burned upon ripping it out...and yes they rip it out. Have fun! Michael Akaydin #918 |

11/5/2009 6:00 PM ya, you obviously can't feel it because I didn't even know they put one in.
I stand corrected. "I didnt want salmon! I said it 4 times!" |

11/5/2009 6:37 PM Autograft from the patella.
I just figured Id rather have a possibly weak patella than a possibly refused allograft. I have CTi's now so maybe that will protect the patella enough. (yeah right). When is yours again? You can call me Kevin. |

11/5/2009 6:39 PM They didn't for either of my meniscus surgeries. At least I don't think they did.
Good luck with everything. Heal up quick. |

11/5/2009 7:01 PM Hey Kevin I had an ACL replacement via cadaver tissue and I never had a catheter. I was out before I knew what happened, and woke up asking when they were going to start (the surgery was already complete). Good luck tomorrow... the hard part will start after the surgery. Best advice I can give is make sure you give the PT 110% and your knee should be fine.

11/5/2009 7:03 PM Yeah my sister echoed that as well, she's an OT. She also stressed the importance of rolling my ankles regularly when Im on my first few days off my feet resting up.
Thanks for the wishes of luck Corey and everyone! You can call me Kevin. |

11/5/2009 7:28 PM I just took my last drink of water at 10:00 for when i go in the morning at 6:15 for ACL on my left knee. Don't worry about the catheter. this will be my 5th knee surgery, 3rd ACL and I have never had a catheter. Not that I know of but I'm sure I didn't.
My best advice is get the nerve block prior to surgery if they offer it. It lasts 12hrs and the surgery is probably 4. So when you wake up you can adjust yourself and get acclimated to being injured without being in pain. Its painless and actually put me to sleep last time before being suddated. The other best advice I have to give is start early with your quad flexes. I was so anal about it my last surgery that I was doing quad sets within the first 5 min. of being in my room. It will make recovery much easier if you don't loose your quad muscle. Is your surgery a same day surgery or will you be staying a night? I'm happy that my Dr. prefers you to stay the night. |

Autograft from the patella.
I didn't get one for my meniscus scopes but I did get one when they did my acl.. Never felt it though. Swiz don't sweat the catheter or the surgery. It's well worth it. I actually lived and raced w/my torn acl for almost a full year . After the replacement, and rehab it was amazing how well my knee worked. I was without an acl for so long that I forgot what it was like to have a stable knee and when it became stable I felt like I got a brand new leg. Now my left knee has a partial tear in the acl and I may be getting it done soon.
Smile..You're going to be real happy in 3-5 months when you get back on the bike and your stability is back. Modern medicine is an amazing thing. Good luck with recovery and rehab.. |

11/5/2009 7:44 PM Flickit- On the phone today they said I will be leaving same day. When you say quad flexes, are you just referring to "squats"?
Dan- I tore the ACL in a race in 1995 and finally got it MRI'd a couple months ago when I jammed it again in a corner and knew it was time. Im really hoping that I notice a big difference, your right Im just so used to having nobby knees I cant wait see what its like having stability and strength again. You can call me Kevin. |

11/5/2009 7:54 PM What I mean by quad sets is actually just flexing your quad muscle. Your leg will be in a brace and be wrapped up real big. You might have a water bladder inside the brace and wrapping and a machine that circulates cold water through it. I hope you get one of those because they are so nice and you can Ice it 24/7 that way. Nothing more than a cooler with ice water and a pump.
Quad sets are simple laying with your leg straight and tightening your quad muscle. It will be ginger when you start but I try to hold 10 sec. rest 10. Do some sets each time I wake up. It doesn't take but a few days to lose your quad muscle and then you have to get it back in therapy. If you do some quad sets from the get go you won't loose it and it will make recovery easier. That has been my experience and for sure what I will be doing tomorrow after surgery. You might consult prior to surgery or a Physical Therapist that will see you after surgery but I have found that it works for me. |

11/5/2009 7:55 PM you're crazy to rob parts off your own body when there is plenty of good tissue in all the morgues. Typically the donor site has the most trouble. JMO good luck and get on that motion machine asap. I am trying to talk my buddy into getting his knee fixed and he is just being a pussy.

My PT stuck me on a office chair with wheels and said pull yourself around the room (carpeted) using your lower legs for 10 minutes. I made it about ten feet. Hammy burn from hell.

Wow--I thought a year was long w/no acl.. You're in for a huge surprise. It's going to be like getting off a 1971 hodaka w/no suspension and climbing on a 2010 450 w/works suspension.

11/5/2009 8:04 PM I don't think I will be doing that for a while. I'm hopeful that I get a hamstring graph tomorrow. I really don't want the cadaver petella. I was told that with a cadaver I would be on crutches about 2 additional weeks than from my own hamstring.

Be there at 8:30am so I'm assuming start at 11-ish? That is not to bad. I have to drive an hour or so to get to the hospital and be there at 6:15 AM. Kinda pisses me off that it is so early. I have to get up and take a shower and get ready about 3:30. I'm thinking about just staying up or cat napping.

11/5/2009 11:36 PM I have no idea about catheters, but the next visit to my Doctor's office the nurses where much friendly to me.
I've had a couple ACL surgeries. Thinks I've Learned. Demand a morphine pump inserted into your knee for the recovery. Demand an electrical muscle stimulator or at least make sure the therapist does. Take Stool softeners as soon as you get home. Demand a quality ice circulating knee wrap. Demand a machine that bends your knee to a certain degree range continuously. Demand a quality therapist because an un-knowledgable one can have you back in surgery for a stretched ligament. I learned most of these the second time around and they make recovery so much better and quicker. |

11/6/2009 5:50 AM Do they really do the catheter? I'm still strengthening my knee from six months ago. I don't remember them saying anything about a catheter being put in, I know I was all loopy when waking up from surgery, but I didn't feel anything different down there either!?
And like everyone else is saying, make sure you stay with strengthening it even after 4-5 months when you think your ok because you'll let your gaurd down and something will probably happen. Best of luck! |

11/6/2009 6:03 AM I got mine done about two years ago. I think the catheter is realy up to your doctor, all of them aproach ACL reconstructive surgery differnt. For me they pulled a graph off of my hamstring. Pain wise and progression wise the recovery was not that bad
(maybe becasue I was only 16??) so I wouldnt get to worried about it. Just do quad sets and ankle slides...alot and dont watch any moto vids until you can start riding again... its the biggest cock tease there is haha |
