I have an 06 yz250 (same bike) and my brother has an 09 ktm. Go with the ktm. The yamaha is decent at everything but great at nothing. The power and brakes are much better on the ktm, the bike holds up awesome and feels new for a long time. The yz motor is on the mellow side but is easy to ride. Suspension is decent stock on both. Haven't revalved the yz yet since I just picked it up last month but I did put stiffer springs in the forks and that helped quite a bit. The ktm is revalved and works great now. Seems a bit pricier to revalve than the Japanese bikes though. He just put the 300 kit on the ktm yesterday so I'm anxious to try that. They are both good bikes but I would go for the ktm, especially if it was an '11.

I would go Yamaha - its a better allround bike. KTMs are lighter and they come wih the hydraulic clutch which is nice. It just depends how much you want to spend. The Yamaha suspension is much better.

How in the hell could a YZ be a better all around bike? It's like a 5-6 year old design. I mean it's not a bad bike but the KTM is in a different class. The YZ like Deetsmx said is basically an average bike. Does nothing really good and nothing really bad. Middle of the road. The KTM will turn under the YZ without putting up a sweat and has about 3 more HP.

KTM doesn't look six years old on the showroom floor and is updated frequently, lighter, more powerful, has better quality components, graphics are imbedded in the plastic and the shrouds cover a black tank that doesn't discolor and look all roached out after a couple of months. It is cool that Yamaha keeps the 2 stroke around, but how fucking hard would it be to update the plastics and give it a fresh look? That alone would bring a shitload of customers back to blue.

The Japs on the other hand have given up and I say to hell with those guys.

The yamaha has great suspension, but if your buying new 2011, then how could you possibly not buy the KTM? Its a no brainer to me, haven't ridden one, but everyone that has either ridden one or owns one can't say enough good about it, and it just looks damn good..and has some nice options for tuning the power to your liking too.

Not to mention for less than the price of a four stroke aftermarket exhaust, you can get a complete factory bolt on 300 engine kit for the KTM.

You cant go wrong with either, but my money would be going to the pumpkin. I rode Yamahas since I started riding til I got my current 10 250SX last fall. I tried a couple YZ250s and really liked them, but the 250SX is faster and has a nicer overall fit and finish. Air filter access with no tools is also a cool concept, and three powervalve springs come with the bike to help tailor the power delivery to how you like it. It was also cheaper for me to buy, so no brainer there. Parts are easier to get than a lot of people like to believe. If you go with the KTM and are a taller rider, swap out the stock bars ASAP.

I love YZ250's more than anyone but if I was going to spend the coin I would by a KTM all day.

If I was going to by a YZ I'd by a left over from 05 cause its not like they have changed anything or are about too!

I'd check parts availability and price. The KTM is a good look'n scoot.

Yea KTM's broken at every track thats why there Orange a caution color, the YZ250 will not break and with ENZO reworked suspension could be the most fun bike on the track. Besides KTM still has a steel frame, and much more expensive parts.

KTM's broken at every track. Please stop talking out of your arse.

What's wrong with a steel frame anyway? If you've actually rode a bike you'd know there is not of difference to a Ali frame.

Exactly! There is a reason almost every woods rider who is paying their own way rides KTM! Those things last forever and almost always finish races in the worst conditions.

Riding position is also way different on both bikes with the ktm being more aggressive, more over the front style and on top of the bike instead of in it. I like my yamaha, it's a good bike and I got it super cheap or I would have been on a KTM, and that's after sayin that I would never buy another after the issues I had with them in 04. Those new ones look badass.

Hum, if they were the same price would you take a 2011 YZF450 or a 2006 model of the same bike?

I've ridden the YZ250s plenty and although a nice all around bike it's not even close to the KTM product. The YZ feels like a an old, fat, dinosour. Which is what it is.

Even though KTM wearable parts are more durable than Jap parts, I've rarely noticed them being more expensive. But then again after 100+ Intermediate pace hours all I've bought is suspension oil and seals, 2 aftermarket piston, lots of rings and gaskets, aftermarkety sprockets and chains.

KTM brake pads are really expensive but I tried EBC and the EBC's lasted like 1/4 as long.

The Yamaha is a superior bike even though old. Better suspension, you will be putting money into the ktm suspension and the linkless ( butt kicking) suspension. Yamahas are reliable, parts are cheaper and more readily available, more durable, generaly a better bike. Remember the AMA SX where a KTM rider snapped his frame in half can't find the vid in the internet anymore, and that was a factory bike that had mechanics that made sure the bike was up to snuff. KTM did not earn the reputation for Kant Take Motocross for nothing. Good that they are steel framed so you can weld them back together, and you will be. LOL
But in all seriousness. I still would not buy one.

i actually just switched froma nice 05 kx250 2 stroke to a 07 ktm250f and rode it today at the track. suspension is far better than my kx ever was.

i would ride just about anything but yamaha. as said, they do everything alright, but dont shine anywhere.

go for the ktm, or grab a 07 kx250
