steel frame yz125????????

Edited Date/Time 12/10/2014 7:56pm
as much as i want to hold out for a nice cheap 06 or newer yz125 to pop up money wise they just seem to be out of my range for now. Plenty of steel frames out there. how close do they compare to the 06 and up bikes?

this will be for a kid moving up from yz85.

Get at least a 2000 or newer and you basically get the same engine. In all honesty the 94 yz cylinder is basically the platform that has evolved to todays engine. I loved my 2000 yz 125.

The 02' thru 04' bikes share the same plastic as the newer ones. I've ridden all of them and the biggest difference between the newer ones are the front forks. The 06' and up forks are just magical. Of course, you can do a fork swap - plenty of newer fork setups on ebay.
The steel frames have a *slightly more cramped feeling riding position than the aluminum frame also, which is probably great for a rider coming off an 85.

You really can't find a 06 or newer for cheap? I got a 06 in 2009 for just over $2000.

The 05 yz125 engine is totally different from the previous years and the transmission was upgraded to a six speed too. In 06 they got the sss suspension Your better off with an 05 an up for racing in my opinion.

to me the 05' and up engine is a little easier to keep on the pipe than the previous generation, but I don't think its any faster. If anything the previous engine made more top-end power.

They went to the 5 speed from 2002 to 2004.

Get yourself a 2004 and put 06+ suspension on it.

Your kid will be thrilled!

I got on for 1300 on craigslist. You could find them lower than that IMO

Steel framed YZ125s are a dime a dozen around here. Probably the most popular bike on C-List.

no i think someone let the secret out.... most are right at the 3K maybe a little lower. im tryin to stay in the 1-1.5k range which will leave me the money to rebuild from frame up.

cant imagine spending 3k and then rebuilding from frame up. if that was an option then i would just be looking at new.

I got my 05 for 1150.. Put a new top end in it and split the cases to clean up some metal shards that were floating around the gearbox due to the faulty shift stopper found in 2005-2006 models. If you get an 05 or 06 make sure to replace this part before it breaks like 99% of them do and then require a case split.

Before:

Here it is after I put about 900 dollars into it. Total, i'm in it for right about 2,000.

This is exactly what I did.

2004 Yz125 off a buddy for 1400, new top and bottom end, 2006 yz250f forks resprung and valved, love the hell out of the bike.

I can say I feel like my bike is every bit as good as my buddy's 06. The transmission is different, you definitely don't ride them exactly the same because of it, but I don't feel the steel frame or even the 5 speed puts you at any disadvantage.

After an Eric Gorr 144 mod (someday soon I'm dreamin) I'm sure the transmission will matter even less.

I've got just under 2600 into an 06 yz 125 that has been rebuilt bottome end OEM and top end athena 144 monster and revalved suspension...you can find the deals and do it cheaply.

05 and older have a higher compression ratio, and newer than that has the suspension, brakes, and bars updates. I owned a 03 and 2011 and the 2011 was a little more plush on the suspension, but that 03 flew and I loved it and was great for coming off a yz85 and would recommend it to anyone. Make sure you don't keep the chain on the tight end of the limit though. Those engine cases liked to crack on the back side of the drive shaft. Went through two engine cases that way
